My nephew has a '84 CJ-7 sitting in my yard with a blown-out rear diff. Would you happen to have a wide-track AMC20 that I could have him get so this yard orniment could leave my yard?

Sorry, I have not had the time to open up the diff to see what exactly is scattered, but the previous owner told him the spider gears exploded. Basically, you start the Jeep, put it in gear, let out the clutch and you hear a grinding noise from the rear and no movement of the Jeep. The rear is not seized up, for it will still roll if you push it, just no power transfer to the wheels. At the time he bought it, I was seeing all kinds of AMC 20's on here for sale from guys up-grading to a D44, 9-inch or D60. Then when he finally gets serious to fix it, no one has anything posted for sale!

Anyway, other than it being a wide-track, since it is a '84, I'm assuming something on the highway gear side. Do you know if AMC stamped the ratio on the axle somewhere? Or is pulling the cover the only way to determine the ratio?

I just figured an axle swap would be the quickest and easiest, since the current axle needs brakes and seals anyway. Figured get lucky and find another with same ratio, pick up some new u-bolts and swap. Or get really lucky and get a deal on a matching front and rear and swap both.

well all the ones that are here would need brakes at the minimum because they have been outsided
there is probably a wide track 2.72 sitting back there or at the minimum a good canidate for some spider gears to swap
just check the tag on the cover if you can still read it
