It's been years since I have needed a jack to change a tire. Any of the above will work for that. However, I bet my hi-lift gets used 3-4 times per year extracting rigs that are hung up in the rocks. Usually it's due to a long travel suspension that is dropped into some form of crevice. NONE of the above will work for that in leiu of a hi-lift.

I'll stick with my hi-lift

Lots of good info. here, thanks for sharing. I just carry a jeep jack, but would like to add a battery impact.

I only hope that some day my junk is capable of getting that stuck.....

As of now if I drive over a hole that big my tire just hangs over it like a dark cloud.

A $100 winch on the axle/chassis will fix that

While the porta power only has a 5" stroke I believe I can make it 5' long if need be to fit in the same area as a Hi-lift.

The difference is when I only have room for a 12" jack I can easily fit a porta power in that area also. Or areas where you simply can not use the handle to jack up a hi-lift.

But, a Hi-lift jack does kick butt and is super simple. Keep the thing greased every once and a while and your good. I carried one as the rear bumper of my truck held on with 2 studs mounted to the frame/big azz locking lug nuts. The thing ate salt, dirt, and whatever I could toss at it. Put a little grease or blaster to it and watch it work without issue. Between the radio, exhaust, and poly handle retainer I never heard it rattle.

I am sure there is plenty of room on your rig to shove a hi-lift jack somewhere. Hey you need a rear bumper right? Just make a tri-pod that bolts to the top with extendable legs to hold it upright and you wont need to worry about it kicking out on you.

I carry a few cutting boards and an extra watts link...there hasn't been a hole I couldn't plug with that stuff

Since you have still not put your rig to the test in the Woodland Rock Course at the Mounds, you would not know the area I am speaking of.

Anway, I had dropped my entire front end between a couple rocks behind the tires and I was sitting flat on my front bumper on a 4 ft or so big round bumper. I could not back up because my rear dif was bound up. Neither front tire would grab the rock in front because it was just inside of their grip. Winching forward only pulled me harder into the rock. I was able to jack it high enough to get rocks under it and also winch forward a little until my tire grabbed.

In each case, the right rear was hanging in space and in both cases, we were rubbing our rear driveshaft yokes on the rocks. (not good). I was able to put the hi-lift under the rear axle inboard of the brake caliper and inside the wheel well. 8-10" of lift allowed the tire to get up and grip the rock.

We used it at least once on Tab's POS also in the past year.

In each case, the item being jacked was at least 20" from the ground and in the case of the wheel, inboard of anything to get a traditional jack to catch.
