Question Grand Cherokee Questions

Looking at buying a '96 V8 Grand.
Curious what the reputation for these motors/drivetrains are. I know the 4.7 (I think) should be avoided, but are there any others to stay away from?
Any certain model years to try and get over the others if this one doesn't work out?
Is the 5.9 or the 5.7 the best motor? I remember a jp mag article mentioning one of the v8's was above the rest, but can't fin the article.
Thanks for the info!

a 96 would have a 5.2 or 318 v8
its the same one chrysler has run for years with better heads and fuel injection
it is a good motor

5.2/318 is the only v8 you'd be able to get in 96 (as mentioned). From 93-97 only the 318 was available, in 98 you could also get a 5.9/360 but they were somewhat rare. In 99 when they switched to the WJ bodystyle they started using the 4.7. The 5.7 Hemi wasn't available until 2005 when the WK debuted. The only real issue to watch out for on v8 equipped ZJs is the viscous coupler being shot on the 249 t-case.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up buying a '98 w/ the 360 5.9.

It is in great shape, so I am hoping to get many more years from it.

Where is the viscous coupler? I have only taken apart a 231 and am not too familiar w/ the 249. There is a tiny amount of play in the front yoke, but no vibes so I didn't see it as an issue.

I picked up a ZJ 98 5.9 with 321,000 miles motor and trans run great, but the VC is shot, you can tell when the front jumps around when you turn (like a front axle with a locker)its geting a 231. anyway lost the rear end that will be fixed tomorrow. just my 2 cents

So I am assuming the coupler is inside the case since you are swapping cases instead of repairing it? Is it a clutch type coupler similar to a limited slip in an axle?

I want to be able to have 2wd plus the VC is bad anyway, have not had mine apart yet but what see it is a self contained coupler with fluid and clutches, that are good for about 150,000 miles and they are $$$$$$. Also son has a 98 ZJ 5.2 with 212.000 miles and I have to do his also. Yes its in the case
