Default Does anyone know what would cause random smoke alarm false alarms?

I have hard wired/battery backup smoke alarms in my house. I moved here 7 years ago and I get about 3 false alarms a year where every damn alarm in the house goes off. It is always in the middle of the night.

The previous owner of the house was a smoker, and all the alarms were discolored. The house was gutted and re-drywalled and I went through and replaced EVERY alarm this spring. This has not stopped the false alarms, I had the second one Friday night. There are no appliances running that are not normally running when it happens.

Any idea's?

Got dogs? Did the last owner? I had wired/battery smokes in my house, and they were going nuts, ADT was sending the fire department once a week. Where the dogs kennels were the smoke head had a nice coating of dog dander between the pickups inside, and gave a false alarm.

They wouldn't warrantee their work either. Bastards.

We had the issue in our home also. We were getting 2-3 false alarms per year for a while. There just is no going back to bed when this happens.

I got some compressed air and blew them out. I do it every time I change the batteries and I believe that we are like 2 years without a false alarm.

Do not use an air compressor but the compressed freon cans for blowing out electronic devices.

My mom has a house that is only five years old that she bought new. She has had a couple false alarms, the most recent being a couple nights ago. She has them hard wired, plus a battery. House has never been smoked in.

Mine go off when there is a power surge. They are linked to house power and use the batters when the power goes out.

I read somewhere they need to be replaced every ten years, is there something that goes bad in them and would cause false alarms?

wondering because my mom had one doing false bad battery beeps and had to pull it, I was going to replace the whole detector, but haven't yet.

fixed smoke detectors are a pain. Blow them out annual with compressed air, replace when that stops working. Thats what works in open squad bay barracks, it should serve you well at home.
