I work outdoors, substation operator/maintenance tech. I like it for the most part, but wearing level 2 fire retardant clothing (long sleeves and pants) gets a little tiresome in the summer. The dead of winter isn't so much fun either...you can always put more clothing on, but once your hands go numb...there isn't much you can do.

Overall, the goods outweigh the bads though...I couldn't imagine going to an office job after doing what I do.

I work outside majority of the time,at a different job site most everyday day.It is entirely better than being stuck in the same four walls everyday, even when you factor in the weather.

Working outside isn't always all that great. Its been brutally hot quite a few days this summer and feeling sweat roll down your asscrack all day sucks. Winter is also fun being cold all day and only really getting warm on your drive home after a 8-10hr day.

The heat kinda bugs me but winter is all good with me. I do good in the cold.
I am an outdoor person, but the job situation has forced me indoors to make a decent living!

I worked construction with my dad through highschool and college and it was rough. The weather sucked bad hot and cold. I hate sitting in my chair most of the day, but I also go to the gym each night to work out/exercise. So now that ive done both, I choose inside!

Werd

I worked for an excavating company, both in the shop and on the sewer crew during high school and college....... you can keep that shit.

For the past 5 years I have been in a hospital. 4 of which were on the floor and 1 in management where I have an office. its 72 degrees all year long, I don't get rained on or sun burnt, its the best. Sure I have desk time, but I have a lot of responsibilities spread out around the hospital so I'm out of my office quite a bit. Between rounding and meetings some days I don't get to my office until after noon. Working inside is not as bad as some make it out to be. If I get tired of looking at the walls or a spreadsheet, I simply round for 15 minutes and come back. I wouldn't trade it...

I used to be a travelling equipment mechanic. I enjoyed it and the money was pretty good. Sometimes in the winter I could find some shelter to work or I could jump in the van for a few minutes and warm up. The summers were not bad at all, I did most of my work in the sunshine when available. I did a lot of fork truck work so most of it was pretty gravy. I also repaired Skytraks. When they broke down they were never indoors. I had to fix them where they sat no matter what the weather. Standing in the 33 degree rain sinking in mud trying to get a Skytrak going was the worst.

I'm self employed now but I'm still close to the outdoors. Feels good man.

I hate people when tell me I am lucky to work outside, maybe 1/5th of my work outside is in the "nice" weather people think I work in all the time while they are in climate controlled buildings. This summer can go to hell btw...

I love when family and friends are between jobs or something and beg me to hire them because they love being outside and learn quick blah blah blah. they rarely last more than a day, either they cant handle the heat, or just suck.

I have done both and I would prefer to work outside, but I am a outside type of person. I grew up on a farm so You get used to it at a young age.

The heat sucks but it is what it is, the cold is brutal and when the wind kick up its even worse, but again you get used to it.

It all come's down to your personal likes and dislikes.

I am a commercial/ industrial hvac service tech, half of my time is outside. I can't imagine sitting behind a desk all day let alone working at the same building everyday.

I'm a consulting forester/ecologist, and my office is the forest. Yeah, I get stuck doing statistics work in Excel from time to time, but being outdoors is why I do what I do. Last summer before I became self-employed, I worked in the Ottawa National Forest, and the summer before that I was in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Right now the work is a bit slow, but when I do have work it's just fantastic.
