Default Technical question

How do I remove a partition off a USB drive? Reformatting and sdelete don't work. They put software on the one partion I can't delete in CDFS format and I can't seem to unwrite it.

I normally leave it in my pocket and throw it in the washer. Seems to remove everything.

there's quite a few posts on various discussion forums about this - apparently conventions are picking back up a bit with "free/promotional" usb jump drives being handed out that have write-protected partitions on them with marketing data, etc.

the options are varied (and the success rates seem equally varied) - several suggest using old school DOS, your mac, or ubuntu instead of Windows 7.

This is exactly what i am trying to do. The only system i havent tried is Mac. I have a promotional usb and I want to remove software whichi is in a partition. I am doing this for a client so I have to do this as a repeatable process, and not because I am being cheap and don't want to buy a USB for myself.
I have tried everything that came up on google.

yeah, using a mac has been my most reliable method on those.

sometimes you can't even see the partition on a winblows machine.

Okay so here's the answer and yes I am proud to say I found it.

Use this tool to find out what type of firmware you have:
http://www.mydigit.cn/mytool/ChipGenius.rar

Once you have the firmware information it is a simple google search to finding a tool to fix it.

I have just set all of your promotional USB drives free.. I am like moses..

I have tried everything that came up on google.

good luck - thankfully I haven't had to find such a solution - it seems that there are plenty of ways that the original vendors have created these things including the hardware 'lock' that is used less frequently but just enough to cause some issues, as well as having that partition actually formatted as CDFS (CD-Rom type) so the OS can't see it as a writable disk.

I dove a little bit deeper than google and found this thread:

http://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/to...e/page__st__20

and this thread:

http://www.icepick66.co.uk/hacking-memory-sticks/

again, good luck - it looks like you may even need a tool to sniff the chipset being used. how many of these things is the client looking to reflash/re-use? It may be simply cheaper to contact one of those promotional vendors and re-order (unless you guys have free interns performing the task).

I was long winded in my reply - chipgenius is referred to in one of the threads I linked :)
