Okay, here's what I don't like about going to church:

I feel my faith is a deeply personal thing, and get no joy / thrill / happiness / satisfaction from sitting in a room full of people and aping some dogma. I've yet to see a convincing Bible passage that says I'm better off doing so.

This doesn't mean that I'm not spiritual.

It means that I get incredibly uncomfortable around people that are (or say they are) and want to make a show of it.

I have nothing against those that do like to participate in an organized way - to each his own. If that's what it takes for them to get theirs, than more power to them. Likewise, I don't care what form that church takes - Catholic, Protestant, "Stealth Protestant Mall Church", Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, or Druid. They're all equal.

I beleive in religion through acts. When I support my family, help in the community, spend time with my loved ones, spend a day in the woods in a treestand, wheel down a scenic trail, or participate in charity those are part of my "worship".

Pushy beliefs turn me off
Fire and brimstone preaching
Intolerance from churches
Church is boring
I can see and feel God, but I can with science
I disagree with Godís existence
There is no logic, only faith, that doesnít fly
Scare tactics used to control people
Some denominations donít follow the bible
Nothing new, all the same stuff all the time
I feel like an outcast among ďperfectĒ people
Time requirement inconveniences me
People judge me for my appearance
Too many politics in the church
Not accepted for who I am
I never liked it s a kid when I was forced to go
I can be spiritual without going to a church building
There are many other things that sound more fun to do
Churches sometimes compete with each other
I have heard bad stories, so I donít go
I donít know what church to go to, so I donít go
Church is kinda cultish
Itís too make believe for me, I am not a weak loser.
Nothing is true, based on lies that I donít believe
Seats are not comfortable
I see no reason to go
Too much corruption in the church
I would rather help people than sit in a pew
I have no time to go
If I went, I would spontaneously combust
I donít understand/agree with Christian ideologies
Lame activities
Communion wafers taste like my poo-poo
They donít meet the needs of their members
I donít see the need to assemble as a large group

Right there, I just do the same thing you... I do believe in God that's why I try to be grateful for the things I've got and improving myself everyday by working on the things that I DO KNOW I AM DOING WRONG not because somebody else (preacher) tells me so. We all know -in our hearts- the things we do.

I haven't read the last 3 pages....

personally, I'm not against going. I'm a C and E as you call them. I am religious, but don't believe in organized religion, if that makes sense. I'm religious on my own time, which usually isn't Sunday mornings. I don't feel the need to congrigate with others to show that I'm religious or to show that I believe in God.

Ive been kinda following this post...

i was raised in a catholic chruch and went to a catholic school up to k-6

i have had many experiences with God, believe in him through and through.

i don't attend church anymore really, but i feel that it's more imporatant about personal experiences and commiting personal time. i do enjoy attending mass every now and then when im with my family, it is a good experience and i like going to other churches sometimtes (luthern or catholic, mix it up, my dad is luthern, mom is catholic)

but when i do attend church, last few times have been easter with my grandparents then my grandpa's funeral, being in church those times were really special because it was so rare...

but i have my gaurdian angle and i belive in God and i try every day to be thankful for what i have.....

i think it's all whats in your heart...

Question for you: would you attend more often is you felt like there was something to learn and grow from? Something dynamic? Would you go more if there were more younger adults there? Woudl you go more if there was more opportunity to help your "neighbor"?

Usually C&E Christians don't knwo they are C&E..

What is it about organized religion that has turned you off? What specifically?

I don't go to showboat either, I got nothing to prove to anyone (so my purpose in going is to receive from God, and to give whatever I can to his people).

It's funny you should ask... it just opened up: www.paradoxchurch.com

I am a part of a team of 35 people who spent 1.5 years starting a church, which has been publically open for almsot 2 months, and I am always interested in knowing where people are at, I figure if the church exists, it might as well be useful and applicable. We endeavor to reverse mistakes of our past. But the point of this thread was not to trick people into an advertisement, I only mention it because you asked.

As I stated in my first post, we are looking for an evangelical church that is based on scripture and not willing to compromise God's message to please the masses.

19 years of being a good catholic, but in the last couple of years I started to see the hypocrisy. I saw how politics and religion seem to go hand in hand. I also found myself questioning what I was being taught more and more.

So, no more church for me. I fell I don't need someone else telling me how to be a good person, I can screw that up just fine on my own.

I am married to a woman who is a recognized minister of her faith. I think that is good enough for the whole family. (oh, and she does not push what she believes on others, at least not our friends and those we know as a couple)

So, in a nutshell, why I don't go to church. Hypocrisy, Politics and the realization that I do not need it to be happy in life.

What type of hypocrisy do you mean? From the congregation or priest?

What church does your wife minister in? What do you suppose keeps her going?

Do you think that churches are able to do things that bring happiness/joy into the lives of those involved? If so, what do you wish your church would have been more about? Helping people?

Dave:

I salute you for doing some Voice of Parishoner (VoP) on this. It is something that is integral if churches are to continue to attract new members. With an open-minded leader such as yourself, I have a feeling your church will do well.

I hope some of you are up for reading a bit more, or even posting replies more. I have categoriezed the results, and will post an individual challenge to each crowd, thanks.

The Apathetic Crowd:
Nothing new, all the same stuff all the time
Time requirement inconveniences me
Sitting through long services
Church is boring
Getting up early is no fun
There are many other things that sound more fun to do
I don’t know what church to go to, so I don’t go
Seats are not comfortable
I have no time to go
I see no reason to go
I don’t see the need to assemble as a large group
I can’t connect with singing as worship, I want to do other things
Communion wafers taste like poo-poo

The Turned-Off Crowd:
All the hypocritical activities
I would rather help people than sit in a pew
Church can be kinda showly, I am private
Christians who say one thing and do another
Too many politics in the church
Some denominations don’t follow the bible
They don’t meet the needs of their members
Scare tactics used to control people
Too much corruption in the church
I can be spiritual without going to a church building
I don’t want to take a preacher’s word for it
I never liked it s a kid when I was forced to go

Church is kinda cultish
Guilt/demand associated with giving money
Begging for money
Pushy beliefs turn me off
Fire and brimstone preaching
Intolerance from churches
Churches sometimes compete with each other

The Intellectual-Out Crowd:
I don’t understand/agree with Christian ideologies
I don’t think God is good because of bad stuff in the world
Logic seems to support evolution instead
It’s too make believe for me, I am not a weak loser
Nothing is true, based on lies that I don’t believe
I can't see and feel God, but I can see/feel with science
I disagree with God’s existence
There is no logic, only faith, that doesn’t fly
I try to find my strength from within, and am responsible for self.

The Banned Crowd:
People judge me for my appearance
Not accepted for who I am
I feel like an outcast among “perfect” people
If I went, I would spontaneously combust

Thar it is
