Besides I'm too old, feble and blind to ride single track anymore. Two tracks is the toughest I can handle.
The KLR will do EVERYTHING, but nothing well. The reason I got a KLR was it would do everything like you said for one helluva good price.

If you plan to single track it I would go with the DRZ, if you want to cruise the E-way I would recommend the KLX.

Now mine:

1993 XR650L with a Clarke tank, Super Trapp exhaust, 675cc bore, and a diet program. I have had the bike in my name for about a month and have put 800 non-commuting miles on already. I am hoping to break 1000 by the end of the month. If any one has a set of rims for sale I am interested; 100 miles a day on pavement will destroy a knobby.

Good bike, decent handling, decent power. Lots of heat towards the rider though. They are reliable. Real good bike considering it was designed in the early 80s and was made more or less unchanged minus minor front brake upgrade and fork upgrade for 20 years before they discontinued it. They can be had cheap too.
The Concours is still made, it has been upgraded to a 1400 and looks very nice. I'm sitting here looking at a new 2012 black one out my office window right now.

I sold the Ninja and thought I wanted to try a tourer, but after researching it a bit, I decided to go with a more middle weight bike. A 2005 fz6 did the trick... It's got a center stand, fuel injection, 26,000 mile valve check interval, decent wind protection up top, and way more power than the ex250. It's basically an r6 engine tuned to have better mid range power.

It came with a Matris Steering Stabilizer, a set of slip on M-4 stainless pipes, and a Dynojet Power Commander III computer. He also gave me a Joe Rocket Jacket, 2 helmets, a spare bulb for the headlight, some Yamalube oil, and chain oil.

The pipes look very nice, but are kind of noisy. I'm going to look into some kind of silencers for them.

The day I looked at the FZ6, I also looked at an amazingly beautiful machine. It was basically pristine/perfect/whatever. A 2000 ZRX1100. It's in Bay City. The guy who owns it is a really nice guy and if anybody is interested give him a call. Here's the ad:

http://saginaw.craigslist.org/mcy/3051703312.html

Here's some pics of the bike:

I friggin' loved the look and feel of this bike, but it just wasn't as practical as the FZ6.

Yeah, I'm aware. I figured the guy was talking about the original 1000 as reviews on the 14 can be found all over the internet. The 14 is a badass bike. I was real tempted to pick one up myself, but chose to go adventure tourer instead. Very happy I did. It does as good in the curves, but I can venture off pavement too. Sport tourers don't like rough trails so much. lol

I don't think they have officers on cycles out here... then again we have more dirt roads than paved roads too.

My new DD. 50 MPG, rides smooth to 75mph with current gearing. Fun bike for work commuting and local riding, I would not want to cross country with it. Its not very fast, but stupid quick.

Any of you guys know of any local shops that sell riding gear in the SE area? My girlfriend is looking for a dualsport/enduro type jacket and wants to be able to try it on first. I told her how easy leatherup is...but she doesn't want the hassle of exchange.

I love my DRZ. Too bad I didn't get my endorsement until the day before I had to leave for work. Now I get to stare at pics of it for the next few months.
