U.P. Honeymoon ideas???

Any ideas of things to do. WE don't have much time because Alexis doesnt have vacation time yet. We are going to leave on Thursday 8/16 and come home monday 8/20. We are driving my step dad's dirtymax with my heep on the trailer.

Here's my plan

leave early thursday, head to taqhuemanon falls, find somewhere to camp or stay in a hotel.

Friday head to drummond Island and soend sometime there, maybe do some skeet shooting at drummond island resort, and stay at the boat house at the resort.

Saturday we are waking up early at wheeling turtle ridge until we see everything or break!! (probably the latter)

After that i dont know what to do.

Is there more to do on drummond or should we head back to the mainland and find something to do????

Budget really doesn't matter, I am sure nothing will be to overly expensive.

We DO NOT want to go to mackinaw island, it smells like horse shit and everything is twice as much as what it should be.

Also the coolest place I found to stay on drummond was the Boathouse at Drummond Island Resort, any better ideas on the island?

I would go the other way. Start at Drummond, and then head west to Taq, and then keep heading west from there.

If you do that I would recommend hiking to Chapel Beach near Grand Marais. It's about a 3 mile hike one way, but when you get there it's freaking amazing. You will see what I mean when you get there.

Then you can move on to Munising - there is a freshly paved stretch of highway between Grand Marais and Munising that is pretty cool. Once in Munising you can stay for pretty cheap at the Best Western or Holiday Inn (don't remember which) on top of the hill just west of town, with a great view of the lake. There is a guide service out of Munising offering kayak tours of Pictured Rocks or Grand Island - the one you go to depends on the wind/waves that day. Very fun, and reasonably priced. There are also a bunch of waterfalls and other awesome places right around Munising.

If you want to keep moving west from there you start to get into Marquette, Houghton, and Copper Harbor...

We did the UP on our honeymoon last summer, it's a great time.

If you're camping at Tahq Falls, take plenty of bug spray. Been there on several occasions in the past during this time of year and the mosquitoes have been brutal. As dry as it has been it might not be so bad now, but there is a lot of marshy areas that seem to bring them out.

Check to see what is still open the farther west of teq falls you go. Alot of the area was destroyed in the fires I think.

Western UP is way cooler than anything on the east side. Lots and lots of two tracks and such to explore, lots of waterfalls and good hiking opportunities.

The wife and I did the U.P. honeymoon also. We started on Mackinac Island (we love the smell of horse shit and fudge ). After that we got a small cabin at a campground just west of Newberry (can't remember the name). It was perfect for 2 honeymooners and fairly inexpensive. From there we did day trips to Teq Falls, Pictured Rocks and went to Oswalds Bear ranch for a couple hours the day we left. Teq Falls is gorgeous with lots of easy hiking. Pictured rocks was cool. I wish we had more time to spend in the Munising area. Oswalds Bear Ranch was kind of neat but not anything I would go out of my way to see. Like other people have said look into what is burnt from the Forrest fires. CONGRATULATIONS on the marriage

The wife and I are going to Mackinac Island next week, but she's got ties there so it's a little more fun than smelling horse poop and eating fudge. Soo Locks is also good to check out for a little while, unless you're 70 years old, then you could probably watch the freighters all day long until you fell asleep on the benches.

Pictured Rocks is a must see. We went last year, tried to hit all the waterfalls in the area, I think we missed a few, but all are worth the effort to see. If you don't have reservations, find where you want to stay and call as early as possible. We went mid August and had to stay at a lodge 20 miles out of Munising. A lot of other towns we stopped at were also booked. Have fun.

We honeymooned across the up when we got married too, one of my favorite places to see was the big spring. It's in palm books state park near manistique. Here is a link to a web page describing it, it's worth a stop on a day trip if you get over that way.

Take here here if you stop in Munising

GPS coordinates: N 46 24.757 W 86 37.573

BEAUTIFUL waterfall you can play in.

Drive east on H-58 out of Munising until you reach the Washington Street (also known as Sand Point Road) intersection. There is a staircase leading into the woods on the eastside of the highway. Please make sure to park on Washington Street as you will be ticketed for parking on the highway.

Can't go behind the falls anymore. They have had some big rockfalls in the the last couple years.
