Default DSLR Recommendations.

Looking for my first DSLR. Budget is under $700 for camera, lens, everything. Looking at the Canon T3i and T2i. Going to be using it mainly for product photography, as well as getting pictures at action shooting matches.

Thoughts?

I'm a Nikon guy, currently with a D3100. I like the T3i because of the flip out screen, I shoot at auto events for my job and for fun, and my friend has the flip out screen that helps with odd angle stuff.

Keep an eye on slickdeals.net, there have been some outstanding deals for T3i's and a lens lately. Well under your budget.

I have a Canon, I have had no issues with it, battery life is great, it will last for an entire weeks vacation taking 6-700 pictures.

You're going to get alot of different opinions and it's been said before, the best thing to do is go try out all the cameras you are looking at. I personally prefer Canon cameras. The menus were easier to get around then Nikon when I first started into the DSLR world. That may have changed but once you start with a brand you pretty much stick with them and I haven't looked at a Nikon since. It's all going to be personal preference though so go try them out and see what you like. You really can't go wrong with either brand camera.

I think generally the Nikon lenses are cheaper than the Canon ones, I heard the electronics are in the lenses for Canon, and they are in the body for Nikon, allowing the lenses to be lower cost. Not sure if thats true, but might be a consideration if you plan on getting a lot of lenses for it.

I was raised Nikon so it's the only brand I've even used. I would stick with Canon or Nikon for sure.

One lens is never enough...

I've got a canon 60d and love it. I've heard in general that nikons are better for portrait photography and canons are better for action, but I think nowadays with how good the tech is, it comes down to personal preference.

Both of the entry level Canon and Nikon cameras mentioned above do not have the lens drive motors in the body, they are all motorized lenses and pricing is similar.

I use a Canon rebel xs (got it for cheap and takes good pics). Just use it for everyday shooting and vacations.

My sister-in-law is a art/photography teacher and wedding photographer in Chicago, and she uses a Nikon.

The wife has a canon powershot sx230, a point and shoot, and it takes about as good pictures as my canon XS for 1/3 the cost.

I agree this discussion goes along with the ford/chevy, honda/kawasaki/suzuki, which tire threads, all personal preference.

Nikon IMHO makes some of the best ones out there. Cannons are nice but I just dont like the fell of the cameras body in my hand.
