Default 98 xj (Tomato)

Just picked up a 98 xj from Illinois. Here is my story. Drove 300 miles with the plans of driving it back to Michigan with a box full of tools and my future wife. Picked up the Jeep Monday night and pulled into the hotel, looked it over and came up with a plan. In the morning we found a gas station with air and a shady spot to work on the Jeep. First the 5 lbs of air in the tires was not going to do, so I got them up to 35 lbs. Next it needed a quick string alignment. We then took it for a ride. Hit 40 MPH and got the death wobble. Pulled into Firestone and was able to use there lift (thanks guys) found the track bar bushing was shot, steering dampener shock was wasted, ball joints were loose and pinion bearing was smoked beyond believe. I thanked the nice guys at the shop and headed to the parts store. Replaced steering dampener shock, tightened ball joints, made new bushing for track bar and checked everything over one last time. We were finally on our way home to Michigan. We thanked the guys at Napa for there sense of humor and a spot to wrench on the Jeep.

Got about 150 miles and had to remove the front drive shaft which I should have done off the start. Filled the front diff back up and headed out. Another 20 miles down the road the pinion shaft broke, locked up the front, snapped an axle and exploded a u joint on the passenger side. The pinion gear lodged itself between the ring gear and the housing and split the top of the diff. 10 MPH down the shoulder of the road to an off ramp in peshtigo we made the call for my tow dolly. Our ride showed up an hour later, loaded up and we were off down the road.

We stopped at a gas station to fuel up and grab a bite to eat then pulled out of the lot to hear a loud crash and see the Jeep along side of us. The toung of the dolled broke in half leaving only the light wires attached. We loaded the broken dolly into the truck and parked the Jeep for the night. Returned the next day with a flat bed to recover the Jeep.

Finally got it home. Pictures soon.

Well it has a 7" lift with 35's, 4.56 gears as of now. Going to get it back in drivable order, replace worn parts to start. It was an adventure thats for sure.

I forgot how much I hate the city. Glad to be home with the Jeep. Pulled all the guts and axles out so I can drive it in the mean time.

Ok got the front axle out and the new one will be here tomorrow. Pulled the rear apart to replace pinion bearing and u-joints only to find out I have a chrysler 8.25. Which I hear is much better then the D35. Correct me if I am wrong. So now I have to return the rear pinion bearing for the correct one.

I ordered new ring and pinion for the front. The carrier I had is junk. Can I use one from a d30 that had 3.08's? Also I noticed one tooth on the rear ring gear is worn. Should I be lookind at a new set for the rear?
