Default professional auto scan tools

So i'm looking at buying a good scanner and I'm looking for recommendations. I've used an OTC Evo a little, Snap On Modis a lot, Snap On Solus a lot, and Snap On Verus a little. I'd like to have lab scope capabilities, possibly flashing/programming too. I'm kinda leaning toward a lap-top based setup. I'm even considering something like this, but that's probably more a dream than reality: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars...?click=main_sr

Back to what I've used, I liked the Modis for its bi-directional controls, but found the Evo a little lacking in Bi-directional functions. Not much experience with the flashing/programing yet, so I don't have much input there. The biggest thing for me really is bi-directional functions to test EGR's, actuators, etc. The other big thing for me is to be able to scope out the sensors and what not without going through the PCM/BCM/etc. To that end, a laptop/shop computer with a good pico scope could be an option too.

So anyways, recommendations and experience? Thanks!

Standard OTTO Test is a nice unit, so is the new Bosch unit, either will do flash IIRC and scope (OTTO may not).
Both can be had for well less than a comparable Snap On unit.

I could help you out with either one if you would like (Or a OTC unit also).

Just get a PICO for a scope, you won't be sorry.

I'm running a Modis. Its big and bulky but the lab scope and programing make it easy to use.

I am also considering selling mine if you are interested.

OTTO Test? not familiar with it at all. looking at the website, they don't seem to do much with euro, but otherwise that looks interesting. which bosch unit? are you a dealer for those or just have experience with them?

I was joking, I assume it's an overpriced piece of crap that's being marketed to people that would have a hard time finding an OBDII port if it bit them in the face.

I picked up a snap on red brick updated to 2000 for $200 bucks and it works great on everything I need. (right up untill someone with a high speed LAN vehicle shows up with a CEL)

ahh gottcha. i love it when people come in and think they know what they're talking about because they know what code the computer threw at them.

we have a brick at my shop, but the other thing i'm looking for is things like steering angle reset on the newer cars, which the brick won't do. as far as i can tell, the otc evo doesn't do that either, but that might be due to using version 4.0 rather than 5.0. anyone use an otc with 5.0 know if it will do steering angle?

I can hook you up with someone that sells them in that area.

I think the OTTO has pretty good coverage on imports but the Bosch may have you covered even better. Look here at the KTS 670 http://www.boschdiagnostics.com/test...s670/Pages/ESI[tronic]Software.aspx

Where do you work at?

we've got a bosch KTS 340 at work, and a genisys scan tool, the bosch unit is terribly complicated, but i'm just a rookie.

Most scan tools now are getting VERY complicated, especially for someone new or not familiar with them. They can do more than many may ever use it for. But they cannot do it well or correctly w/o someone who can maximize the ability of the tool.

You should look into the tool by OTC called PC Scan. It has the same software basis as Pegisys which is the big brother to the OTC Evo Genisys. Here is a link I quickly found, but I am sure you can buy it without the netbook and without all the OBD 1 connectors.
