Sounds look a great deal
If your worried about he vp44, look for a 1994-1998 12 Valve Cummins
They have an injection pump cooled by engine oil, low fuel pressure will not take out the pump... just make the truck less powerful until fixed.

I bought a 96 cummins with 355,000 on it. Sold it with 418,000 miles, still roalin' coal

If the VP44 has never been running under a low fuel pressure condition, they will last forever. The second they lose fuel pressure is when they die. (The fuel cools and lubes the vanes of the pump.)

First thing I'd do is add a fuel pressure gauge or light in the cab. The pump itself is about $1k, and isn't fun to replace, but it's not impossible.

Whatever you do don't buy parts from dodge for the the diesel portion of the drive train. $$$!

I just bought a 2wd version of the same truck for $2500. It doesn't have the rebuilt trans either. Mine has 315k on it, and runs like a top. The only difference is mine was a fleet vehicle so I know it was taken care of.

I'd recommend taking a fuel pressure gauge with you and putting it on the shrader valve closest to the injection pump (right on the pump on the drivers side). Make sure it doesn't drop to 0psi when you rev it up. If it does, I'd count on changing an injection pump at some point in the future.

When I checked mine, it dropped when revving, but never went to zero. I immediately bought an Airdog Raptor pump and put it on. Now the pressure is a constant 15psi over all RPMs, which is what the pump needs to be happy.

Just brought it home. Ran great except for the howling power steering pump
