Pretty sure lasting a few years was in regards to abuse, dents, cracks, and other damage, not rust.

Unless you wad the car up at high speeds, there is no reason a chassis would only last a few years... It will need to be repaired/altered numerous times a season, which is why plating it is rediculous.

unlike his other ideas like dry sumping a Buick 225, building a complete body from 3/4" thick UHMW, portal boxes on his differentials, etc...

That's too bad, I liked the idea. The price was high, but I had hoped these would catch on and volume would lower the cost. I think Extreme 4x4 build something using these once.

If you're saying a company can't make money selling portals, you're on crack again.

IF I was still into crawling, building axles with volvo portals or using skylift axles would be on my list of to-dos.

they tried it, they can't do it...too much investment for very little in return, you are talking about using standard bulit potral axles, these are add ons for d60's...axle tech in not a small company, they know what they are doing, there just inst a big enough market for them

I suspect that to be true. Lots of investment to tool up for something like that and it would take a lot of volume or very high piece price to make it pay back.

the guy who spear headed that project is luckey to have a job after this...they spent a shit ton in research and tooling and even after that they still went ahead with the program, only to have an expensive add-on that few people are willing to spend the dough on...thus a fail
