I had a 2004 Rubicon. I liked it a lot. I also had a shit ton of $$ into it and regretted not buying a V8 YJ on 1 tons for 1/5 the price.

Also think of the type of wheeling you will be doing. If it is the sand dunes and the 2 tracks in Michigan - find a TJ and put a budget boost or 3" lift and 33's on it like mentioned before.

If you plan on doing more of the "extreme" shit, then you will need something a little more.

Mine started stock on 31's.
Went to 3" lift and 33's.
Went to 6" long arm and had 36's and 37's.

I preferred it the most on 33's.

I don't think he was saying "go buy a rubicon"

if Scott wants something for milder wheelin, I think a relatively stock TJ would work well, with the 3-4 inch lift, and 33's which falls pretty much what's mentioned as where solgoode said his "preferred" size was.
If looking for wild "hard core" wheeling, then I would agree to buy something like a built cj/yj but then recommend a tow vehicle too. That I don't' see happening under the 8k (truck, trailer, and trailrig)

That's pretty much what I've decided to look for although TJs look badass with 35s IMO. My wheeling will be limited to The Mounds, Bunny Hill, Silver Lake and whatever 2-tracks I can find up north. I don't want a dedicated trail rig since I also want to be able to pick up a 12 pack in town with the top off if I want. Finding something in decent shape and lifted with the 4.0 and 5-speed is proving to be quite a bitch. I really want to try to find one with a D44 too in case I decide to add a locker down the road.

I wouldn't recommend drinking a 12 pack with the top off, too easy to get caught, keep the top up and go get it muddy, then get the 12 pack, it's like tint but better

Good call. That's why I'm here; you're all so wise.

89 YJ 350 TBI, fresh rebuilt 700r4 trans, 231 t-case with SYE, Full roll cage, Coil front suspension with welded in TJ coil buckets, D30 front axle 4:10 gears, Ford 8.8 rear with 4:10's, detroit locker, disc brakes, rear suspension 4" spring under, Flowmaster exhaust, almost new 35" KM2's on Baja wheels. Solid body, nice interior. How's $7000 sound? Just tossing around the idea of selling it. Not a must by anymeans and I'll probably get flamed from some friends for even putting this

You know that is a little too much Jeep for a first rig. :)

I've been tossing around the idea of selling my TJ since I'm not home to drive it. Its a 98' Sport with 4.0L and 5 speed. Has 3" Zone offroad lift and both hard and soft tops.

tj vs yj
my group of friends took a trip to bundy hill and we all have some form of traction modifier and we all have either yjs or cjs
except for one guy that had a long arm tj with open difs and 33s
the tj followed us everywhere we went form what ive seen its all about wheel contact, if you keep all 4 wheels on the ground you can go anywhere and the coil suspension lets you do that
basically its alot easyier to make a tj more capable
