Default HELP NEEDED.....Let Eric Play!!

Eric Dompierre is a young man with Downs Syndrome, he is going to be a Senior next year at our local high school. The MSHAA will not let him play with his team his Senior year, because he will be 19. Other states make exceptions for students with disabilities to participate in sports, but the MHSAA has no plans to change their rules. Eric loves basketball and is a part of the team. The chance to participate in sports gives him a sense of pride and belonging. If you feel that Eric should be allowed to play, please send an email to the MHSAA .

Proposal for MHSAA rule change

Any support would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I'm really not trying to be a dick, I promise I'm not, but, aren't we supposed to treat people with disabilities just like anyone else?

I understand where you are coming from. But YOU try to explain to a Downs kid why he can't play based on his age.

Only as long as you don't offend them or make them sad.

thats bullshit, let me do some more research and ask friends because we had a 19 yr old on our football team that fought the same thing. (he started late in kindergarten because of dead beat parents really). What it came down to was that EVERY student has 4 yrs of varsity eligibility unless in the extra yrs the student was still younger than 19. (basically you failed a year and were young to begin with).

wtf.

If they could thrive while being treated like everyone else, they wouldn't be considered disabled. We install elevators and build ramps so that those in wheelchairs can have access to the things that the rest of us have access to. That's fair and humane. Eric needs a waiver of the age rule to have access to a fourth year of hs sports like everyone else. He poses no risk to other athletes and won't give his team an unfair advantage. That's fair and humane too.

I think this is a little different and should be looked at case by case. He certainly isn't helping his teams chances in games, except maybe as a morale booster. He only plays in blowouts like many ohter disabled kids who join an d play. He's practiced, committed to his teammates, let him ride the bench and enjoy his senior year.
