Wrong.

I have seen the stores computer list the wrong parts (early TJ front axle u joints) and have had the wrong part come in the box (clutch master cylinder in a box for a slave cylinder)

I have seen that also. I always check several places

I constantly work on weird, off-branded machines that I have never seen before and have no manuals or other info on. A real tech can figure things out and make it right. A parts pounder would use the excuse that he hasn't worked on "one of those" before. At least in automotive things are very similar. Still the techs responsibility if the part is installed.

I've had my parts guy override the computer or book quite a few times, simply based on experience.

Autozone's computer will give the wrong front axleshaft u-joints for a 97 Cherokee every time. Tell them you have a 97 wrangler instead, you get the right part.

THIS!!!!! I have wheeled with the owner of the local Car Quest and have had no problem unless I ordered the wrong thing myself. He has told me on several different occasions to just order the parts from somewhere else since he can't get it cheaper or one of a decent quality. I can call and have a $10,000 dollar crate engine ordered and pay for it once it comes in. I called a chain parts store once and they wanted me to drive to them and place a deposit on a three dollar gasket. I vote for a less box like store rather than Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and the like.

the trick to parts is walk right past the pimple faced high school kid that greets you first.
look for the oldest guy on the counter, and wait to speak to him. do this every time.
when you go there and your normal guy is not there, the pimple faced kid will jump through hoops to impress u.
pay what ever he asks, and dont bitch about it. if you buy a bunch of stuff for a repair, and have a few small parts left over, keep them.
dont annoy him with 5$ returns cause you didnt know what you needed ahead of time.
get all your parts from him. get your friends parts from him. buy alot of shit from him.
once he gets to know ya, the prices will fall in line. the more you buy, the lower the price.
the part that took a week to get, will suddenly appear in a couple hours, after he makes a trip to the warehouse.
the more he sees your face, the more he will cater to your needs.
after a while he will order your stuff without a deposit, and returns and warranty will be a non-issue.
place your orders early in the day, so he has time to round up your stuff.

take in some donuts one time, he will remember that for years!
no one is above bribery or extortion!

if you want the right parts, give him the right info. build date often matters! vin code can matter.
the wrong info will get you the wrong part everytime guaranteed!!

when people told me the wrong year, it took days to get the right part that was on the shelf the whole time.
if your too lazy to open the door and check the build date then screw you!

avoid any chain store like the plague! they are there to get car wax only.
go to a mom and pop parts store, better employees, with more knowledge.

Mines a CarQuest also. I take them a 30 pack every so often. They like it. I like it. It works out. They also have a service shop and do my exhaust work. Like I said you just need to find a good place and stick with it. Once they get to know you and your habits your parts will be on the shelf a week before you need them.
