Default Fuel Economy Conspiracy

I believe their has been an on going governmental / auto manufacturer / oil company conspiracy, to control the market, drive consumption, in order to fund the government through controlled amounts of consumption I.E. Revenue in taxes.

Their have been all kinds of stories about this, some believable, some not,
Here is a link to snopes related to the pouge carberator story that started it all.
http://www.snopes.com/autos/business/carburetor.asp

Here is a link to a diesel ford tempo from the 80's my brother owned one of these and you could get 50 miles to the gallon on the hyway.

The New diesel ford focus gets over 50 MPG conventional, not sold here.
http://www.autoweek.com/article/2011...REEN/110409933

If this technology was available in the mid 80's, WTF is going on now, Why can't the manufacturers sell these gas / diesel vehicals here, why are we off on to a battery operated car that will go 40 miles and cost $42,000 dollars.

Why does my truck get 12.4 MPG,

End rant.

Look at the diesel fuel over there -vs- hear and you will ind the answer why we dont get the sweet diesels they have over there. They have lower sulfur fuel then we do

Oh and if you want go the conspiracy route blame GM for turning America off to diesels ever since there craptastic 350 diesel left such a bad taste in everyone's mouth no one wanted to buy diesels until almost thirty years later

Also comparing cars from the 80's to today's cars won't work, they have less safety equipment to lug around less emission shit on them and in general a lot lighter

don't get me started on safety equipment

did you know tire pressure moniters are legally required now?

no amount of technology can fix stupid. if you're a shitty driver its probably because your an idiot or you learned through our shitty drivers ed classes.

take drivers ed, turn it into a 2-3 month course or so, include things like controlling a skid and threshold braking, not having kids sit in a classroom for 20 hours then hitting the streets having their parents teach them.

There is a lot higher emissions standards now for diesel now in the U.S. now. Look at the vw jetta tdi a 2005 gets better mpg's than a 2012 U.S. car companies don't think they're worth building. People still think diesels are loud, smoke and slow. The is not the case anymore. If vw diesels were to out sell the prius they would be trying to make a diesel car.

I think your tinfoil is too tight. I don't doubt there are corporate funded interest groups who lobby in DC, but that is normal for just about every big industry.

GM probably harmed diesels sales more than any other single factor.

Had a Renault Laguna diesel 6 speed rental in Germany. I would love to be able to buy that car here.

No. Not on any sort of in depth level where I could make any sort of educated argument about them.

However, I do wonder about this.

I am curious, how many more miles per gallon could we get out of our cars if we lightened the restrictions on emissions of the auto manufacturers by x%, Now after doing that, how many less gallons of fuel would we use as a nation, and now, how many emissions have been eliminated from the refinery process, and how many less barrels are we using?

Clearly that's some sort of argument going on somewhere in washington, and I don't know enough about it to know if it's a valid argument. Scooter? Bones? others with engine controls/calibration experience care to chime in?

Bones, My question to you is this. A Taurus that averages, say, 20 highway and a TDI that averages 50 highway. Both take the same 200 mile trip burning 10 gallons for the Taurus and 4 for the TDI. Which would pollute more? I say the Taurus. Diesels might pollute more per gallon, but gas pollutes more per mile driven. If you can offer insight as to a more scientific answer please do, I am interested.

THANK YOU!!! I agree with this completely. I started on a dirt bike and got told to not fall down and where the clutch was in 5th grade, I had to learn how to control the bike and respond to a loss of control. When I moved to a four wheeler I learned a lot about how to handle a panic stop, a skid on ice, evasive maneuvers, and if I didn't learn I crashed or fell off. I am not saying I am a driver that will make your jaw drop, but I can handle a car and get it to do what I want.
Also, are you serious those damn things are now required? I wonder why the cost of a car is what it is. You can't fix stupid and protect an idiot from himself.
