Default Dana 44 Front in a One Ton?

I'm thinking of converting my 1994 Ford F350 to four wheel drive. The truck is a dually and gets stuck on it's own shadow. I can get a divorced t-case no problem but I really don't have the cash for a Dana 60. I have uber easy access to several 3/4 ton Dana 44s that I can pick up for next to nothing. The truck is strictly a street truck and will only have stock tires on it. I mainly need the 4wd to help out when I'm pulling a trailer in low traction conditions.

Another thought I've had is to take a passenger side drop 1 ton axle and converting it to driver's side drop. I'd do that in a heartbeat if I could pick up the axle cheap.

Your thoughts please.

i dont see an issue using a 3/4 ton axle being that it wont be seeing big tires or off road abuse

That's sorta what I was thinking. The truck is rated at 10k GVW but 99% of the time it will be in the 8500# range.

best thing to do would be to get a ttb dana 50 out of a 3/4 ton diesel the same year as your truck. also a dana 44 will be quite a bit narrower than a dually axle you would have to run the wheels off of the 3/4 ton pick up

I'm aware that I'd have to run the 3/4 ton wheels. Its just a work truck so the wheel mismatch is not a huge deal. If I could find a cheap Dana 50 I'd take it. The truck will require a drivers side drop front axle but I can convert a passenger side drop to driver's side drop.

ill keep my eyes open, generally craigslist. im not tryn to say a 44 wouldnt work, im sure it would actually be fine but a 50 is direct and its all factory so if it breaks and parts place should have the parts in stock.

I want a straight axle. I own a welder. I'll make any axle fit in the hole.

A buddy of mine who owns a salvage yard said he would GIVE me a complete TTB Dana 50 with everything required to install it for free! Sure, I don't like twin shit beam axles but I can't argue about the price.

I have a set of dually hubs if you want them. You can take the SRW dana 50 hubs from the ttb and put them on a 60, I'm not sure if you can put the 60 drw hub on the 50 though but it might be worth a try.
