Default Blacksmith anvil (large)

been tossing this around for a while now. been thinking of getting into blacksmithing as a hobby and need to find a proper anvil. going rate is about $1 lb for anything decent. would love to find something in the 150lb + range.
any other blacksmith tools and items might be worth looking at also.

I was looking for one a couple years back. Theyre expensive. I remember them being more than $1/lb. Hope you find a nice one.

I found a guy that was cleaning his shop out and was getting rid of everything. Wouldnt part with that damn nice anvil he had though. I should probably do a followup one day.

A good one will ring when hit, a bad one will thud.

I have wanted one of these for years, I have been to farm auctions a plenty, I wish you good luck finding a decent unit for $1 a pound.

If its any help, I got mine at a antique shop. it needed some work but rang clear and long when tapped with a steel hammer.

(No I'm not selling it)

I looked for a good antique anvil for over 5 years befor I found one that was good, or was not outrageously priced.

Get an old one, most of the new ones are crap and expensive.
Look for A ferrier supplier, they would have a direct line to them new and used.

Hope that helps

Yea that... I about crapped myself when I saw the prices for new.

Really, haunt the antique stores....I found several that were in the < 80# range, but I to was looking for 100#+

the best I found after years of looking was 110# for $120 in downtown Ann Arbor of all places (they didn't know what they had apparently)
I bought it, resurfaced the face and its been a wonderfull tool to have.

Unless you really need the surface ares, 150# is really big. I find that my 110# is plenty big.

Good luck in your search

I haven't seen one at auction for a few years, but they typically go for $300 plus for a large one. Check www.auctionzip.com and do a keyword search for anvil. Your best bet for finding one at auction.

I got one that is probably #150 that was in a dusty corner of my barn. I love the thing, use it all the time. Now I am going to have to go out and hit it with a hammer and find out if it is a good one. No I don't want to sell it, lol.

Dont smack it as hard as you can....thats not good. it can be dangerous
You should be able to just let gravity do the work.
Just let the hammer face tap the face of the anvil, (make sure the face hit flat) it should rebound (Bounce) and the avil should ring clear for a short time.
If it does, tap it harder to hear the ring or the thud if its cracked.
If it the hammer bounces, but it sounds more like you hit a crushed heavey wall steel pipe, you have a crack most likely.

also, be warry of hitting it too close to the edge, the do chip.

wear eye protection, you are hitting two pieces of hardrned steel together, the hammer may chip.

Hope that helps
