Question about salvage titles

This thread pertains to a luxury sedan, not a 4x4. Lol, I'm not in a lot of different forums, but I thought that maybe one of you could answer my questions about salvage titles. Can a vehicle have a salvage title for the interior being destroyed? I'm looking into a Cadillac CTS that has a salvage title. Someone poured a can of red paint all over the interior.

I honestly have no idea, but replacing the entire interior on a cadillac cts could probably be a pretty penny.

A lot of joy rided rigs get trashed on the inside for no reason. Could've been trashed and crashed.

Are you sure its paint?

I know the Leah has spoken, so the matter is settled, but I figured you might like more than a single word explanation.

Any time a vehicle is considered a "total write-off" by an insurance company, which roughly means that the repair cost is more than the value of the car, the title will be changed to a salvage title. Circumstances can differ based upon who was technically in possession of the title when the car was "distressed". Dealerships, insurance companies, and individuals all have different rules, but essentially all end up with the orange salvage title.

That having been said, you could buy the car, fix the interior, get the $100 inspection done, and title it for yourself and have a pretty nice CTS on the cheap. Just pray the crazy bitch didn't do anything else to the car, like sugar the gas tank or something.

The whole exterior was keyed also.

I looked at that on CL a few days ago and yes it could have a salvage title for that but I think it says that it had a salvage title prior to that.

I didn't catch it saying that it previously had a salvage title. I have a DSM right now I'm looking to re-paint...I'm not to sure how fond I would be of having two vehicles to repaint. From the pics it looks like its parked in a truck yard somewhere, not getting driven. I have military car insurance, which might not even cover a salvage vehicle.

That's possible but I have not had any issues getting salvage titled cars insured, I would guess to say I have had about 5 or 6 salvage cars and no issues getting them insured. Never had military insurance though.

Do you personally think its worth dropping that much on a salvaged vehicle? I'm not so sure my husband will go for it, but he's a mechanic so I could hope he would. He wants a CTS, I want an SUV. Can you even have a salvaged car put on full coverage insurance?

The rules are more precisely this:

If the damage is 75 to 90% of the value of the car, it gets a salvage title.

http://www.mi.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1...6323--,00.html

If the damage is 91% or more of the value, then it gets a scrap title.

http://www.mi.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1...6116--,00.html

Once it gets a scrap title, it can never be driven/re-titled again under the same VIN.

The rebuild/retitle process for salvage vehicles can be found here:

http://www.mi.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1...6394--,00.html

If you get it, I'd photograph/document everything before you start repairing it. Because once you do title it, the new (non salvage) title will still indicate that it used to be salvage, and it limits the value and potential buyers whenever you want to move on from it. Documenting what happened could make a potential buyer more at ease, seeing that its not flood damage or a nasty wreck or something...

It was probably a bank repo the prior owner took liberties with before it got repo'd.

I just sold my 96 bronco a couple months back. It was a salvage title. I believe it was a theft recovery so it was reassembled at some point prior to my ownership. I took a hit on it for the market value because of the title. I am sure I could of gotten atleast $500 more for it had it been clean. I had no issues with insuring it.

You heard wrong.

Either the company does insure salvage title vehicles or they do not.

The largest insurer in the nation does insure salvage title vehicles.

Nothing crazy about it.
