Ok, someone give me some advice about my trans. It is making a grinding noise while the engine is running, first thought it was the pump, now not so sure. I pulled the starter looking for rub marks, there are a couple but they look old

Then I looked inside and saw a little rub mark on the converter

Then I looked inside and saw this

Now I know the starter didn't do that, the hole wasn't there originally that I know of, looks fresh to me. I don't see anything else out of place, but even with the starter out while running it still grinds.

What should I do, pull the trans to inspect it, run it till it breaks, or is there something else I can do easy?

Can a converter go bad? The truck still moves, just loud. Advice please, thanks.

Could be something in the bellhousing that was moving around and now is wedged where you can't see it. I would pull the trans and take a look, if you don't find anything it will probably be in the trans anyways.

Iagree, something made that hole. Pull the trans. Or atleast loosen it up and slide it back an inch. Can you reach around the convertor and feel for any grooves on the backside?

And get an auto starter instead of that manual one .

I just went out with a mirror and looked at the back of the converter and it is all scraped up. Something back there. Maybe a pump bolt came loose?

Guess I will pull it. Anyone have a tranny jack I can borrow for the weekend?

Kyle my FIL has a homemade setup he uses when he pulls his chebby trans and it works with a normal small floor jack. I can see about grabbing it or you can stop by and snag it on your way home tomorrow. Its in Cedar just off 17 mile by algoma.

cross checking numbers, the mustang starter is the same auto or manual. It is also the same part number as an 87 f250 with a 5.0, the manual truck starter is different and looks shorter. Think I have the right one.

Thanks, no rush though. Gonna do it this weekend, just need to figure out something to support it enough to slide it back so I can pull the converter and see what's messed up.

Your right, so I just did. And found this

I lost that fucker when I was bolting my motor mounts and I didn't have the starter in yet. Well, found it now. It was brand new too lol

Good news is the trans is quiet now and it didnt do any serious damage. Guess I can move on with the rest of my to-do list.
