I work midnights in the city, not as a cop though, as alarm response since the police can't do it. When it's cold out, it's not too busy but as soon as it's above 40 it sounds like a war zone.

I remember my first night working there a few months ago, I was walking down an overgrown back alley behind a commercial building and a block away I heard 5-6 shots go off. This was about 2 hours into my first shift and all I could think was "so this is how this job is going to go"

No, yes, no. I went to school for law enforcement so I should get used to it. I wouldn't mind working for DPD but I got my letter that said they have no $$ for hiring, (surprise surprise, I applied a couple years ago and they still just graduated a class). I took the job to stop being a leach on the government tit since my dad's business closed up and I was unemployed. It pays the mortgage instead of being "that" deadbeat and leaving the house for the bank. I signed on the dotted line and I intend on paying.

The Detroit Police Department, grappling with deep funding cuts in a city with a spiraling budget crisis, acknowledges that response times are high and says it is working on a plan to lower them. But a spokeswoman for the department insists the rise in justifiable homicides is unrelated

HA!

X2

Tj, So I understand, you work for a company that has you walking back alleys in Detroit, don't pay well, and without a life insurance policy, but they have you armed?

What company do you work for? Who pays your legal bills if you were to get into a legal situation (fight, shooting ect.) Do you interact cooperatively in concert with the police?

The company supplies lawyers in case of need and when I get to a run if there is an actual alarm nothing is done without police at my side. Most of the time we also double or triple up with other people on the shift, and a lot of times its drunks coming home that don't enter their alarm code in on time that triggers the alarm. Some of the other officers are ex military and laid off police officers as well.

In reality on the midnight shift it's not that busy, I may only go on 3-4 runs in the entire shift. The afternoon shift is worse at 12-15 runs in a shift. It's kind of like an EMT, I only work on call. When not on a run I typically sit in a CVS parking lot that is next to a police station and watch movies on my iPod. I definitely don't plan on making a career out of this job. Like I said I took it to get off unemployment and I am actively looking for another job until police departments start hiring again.

I'm trying to understand. Not getting down on you for the job at all, I think it great that you have gainful employment. so please bear with my idiotness...

You say that you don't do anything with out PD by your side, but you respond to calls as an armed person. You say that it's usually drunks... Is this done with PD responding with you, or do you go, asses, and then call in PD? Further, you said that you were walking down a back alley, at night, in Detroit. Is this a company activity (patrols?) Are you dispatched (on call) by PD(central) dispatch? In a marked security car?

Is it the companies/homeowners (clients, I assume with the security systems that are activated) that hire your company?

Are you jealous he's man enough for the job? Just trying to be a dick because you don't have one? Or just plain fucking retarded?

I'm just trying to figure out where the alarm comes from, so I understand. If PD dispatch sends him, or of the alarms company calls him. I haven't heard of a job that seems to have the dynamics of his, and I think it's interesting.

It's nice to see somebody that takes responsibility for their actions. We are a dying breed.
