The way I see it, I'll buy the chains and with the money I saved over AWD I'll pick up a snowmobile for recreation. If I need AWD I'll buy it later or rent a 4x4 for the day. Thanks again, this was really sort of off topic.
Seeing I spent 5 years up there with a 2wd mini truck I'd say the roads will be on par with NJ. You'll do fine, just buy snow tires. I know plenty of people with FWD cars up there that have no problem getting around. Some of the easiest times I've had getting around up there was in a FWD car (before I got my jeep). Besides its a learning experience anyways.

Is it possible, yes, anything is possible, but it's just kinda stupid.
That's great. I spent 30, without 4wd. I only got 4wd AFTER I left. He's fine with his minivan and snow tires. If anything the assholes in Jersey trained him on how to react to icy conditions on a moments notice with out playing pinball with his wife and kids. He needs to acclimate, but he'll be fine.

I was driving to work this morning and it was 28F and raining but it seemed to be well salted , I assume its balck ice and drive 20mph. in a 40. A Range Rover Sport comes flying up behind me followed by a Mercedes ML, I pull over to let them pass. About 1mi. up the road the Range Rover went into the ditch and the Mercedes followed him into the ditch and hit the Range Rover.
Absolutely hilarious!

With cars you get into the front vs rear wheel drive theory . Push vs pull . But , it does come down to the driver . I'm not saying that a small ("smart car") would be the best choose .

To get you by the first season . Good tires and a good battery .

If you like that city living . That is not , where you are moving to

If you ever want to become poor . I see a jeep in your future

You're right I have a bad headgasket on mine(trail rig). It's easier to change the motor then dick with a headgasket + I know I overheated it bringing it home so guessing I jacked up the head bad.
Oh and that motor in it has 270K on it. :)

My son drives a 96 Olds LHS which is front wheel drive and does just fine. His snow tires help a lot. He has been a student at MTU for the last 4 years. There are some very steep hills in Houghton and Hancock. So far this winter has been very mild and they have had little snow but that is not normal. They do a great job of keeping the roads clear and many people do just fine in cars. I have visited the area many times and you will enjoy it if you like the outdoors. Marquette is also a great city.
