While I will agree with you that most republican's have their heads in the cloud, I'll also state that most have their head in that cloud as well.

I will never understand how people can be one sided for/against a political party. It amazes me.

With the topic at hand, I will agree that a moon colony is not the best use of our $$. That said, I think that we do need a space exploration program in place, one that's realistic and allows us to gain something from it.

And anyone saying that space exploration isn't worthwhile needs to revisit Kennedy's moon shot and think about how technology developed specifically for that is still changing our society.

If the general public had any idea the technologies that come from government agencies like NASA, DoD, DOE, etc there would be no opposition to funding them and we (DOE/DoD) wouldn't be in the budget crisis we're in.

in the 1960's when john kennedy, a proposed putting a man on the moon in 10 years, the entire country got behind it.

today, when NG, a makes a proposal for a sustained space program, which includes a trip to Mars, the idea is deemed silly.

NASA's budget is .5% of the federal budget. If they simply doubled it to a whopping 1% we could be on the moon permanently within a few years. All the heavy lifting was done in the 60's and even then the NASA budget was less than 4% of the whole.

The return for investment is huge. The amount of helium 3 alone on the moon could change the face of our energy economy. If China gets to it first it could go very bad for us.

Also spreading the human race into space is essential for our long term survivability. The clock is ticking on this planet, a globally catastrophic impact event will occur at some point. A self sustaining moon colony would more than double our chances of surviving. Not only would we be spread out but the technologies developed to create the colony could be used to prevent an impact.

I'd rather see NASA get the 1.5 billion per year we give to Egypt.

Or the billions we give to Mexico.

Or the billions we give to people in this country simply because they don't want to work.

The US pisses a shit ton of cash away on things that have a 0 return.

If he plans to build it with the child labor he wants to legalize, that would bring the cost down substantially.

Child labor? I need to look into this...I'll probably get flammed for this but fukc yes - most of my generation and the younger ones have ZERO clue what it actually means to work, nor do most of them have an actual understanding of what it means to EARN. I think this would change that...to a degree.

I'm not saying take an 8 year old and make him slave for 50 hours a week, but to have a 10 year old do a few hours of work at the farm a week would do us some good.
