Default Reddy Heater Tech

So, close to 30 year old Kerosene Reddy heater. Has performed flawlessly for years and abuse until today.
Turned it off to fill the tank, plugged it back in and just spits out fuel. Open it up and really weak spark.
Well I think this is the original plug and the gap is way outside spec, so new spark plug.
Start it up with top cover still off perfect, nice bright, strong spark good to go. Turn it off, put the cover back on and no start.

Seems to start and run fine with the cover off. I just now started it with the cover off and the slid it on and it was fine. Any ideas why? it's almost like maybe too much fuel going in, but the nozzle should regulate that.

It's not like the $50 my dad bought it for at a garage sale in like 1986 hasn't paid for itself, and i could just buy a new one at this point, but this one does still work well, up until today

Have you checked ALL the rubber fuel and vacuum lines for dry rotting and cracks? I had problems with my newer reddy heater with the lines rotting out. It was only a year old to. Or the pick up filter in the tank?

That was next up, it was getting cold out there.

There is a ton of fuel spraying, but maybe when i had to move things to change the plug it cracked a 30 year old rubber line.
