Well business is starting off pretty slow but that is giving me time to do some improvements around the shop. I've been scraping the exteriour of the building in preperation for paint. I'm going to paint it some type of grey, not sure exactly how dark I'll go. I'm also replacing all the wood surrounding my bay doors. After that I will be putting new weather seals around the doors. My goal: no more snow drifts inside the shop! After that is all said and done, I'm going to make my bathroom pretty with new paint, new shitter, new sink, and fresh floor tiles. I'll post pics of the progress.

Pulling a code is hardly a "diagnosis".

You think? I typically charge one hour of diagnostic time. Some people think repair shops have some magic computer that tells the stupid mechanic exactly what is wrong with no confusion what so ever. I used to get tired people's stupidity when I had so much invested in diagnosing their car.

The Cheap Charlies are out there. I had a guy just teill me that $18.99 for a oil change, filter, and tire rotation is too much money.

Since the shop is slow, I thought I would make some improvements around the place. I painted the shop bright red in 1996 when I had a towing/repair business there. Over time the paint turned kinda pink and has been peeling. I scraped all the loose stuff and I primed over the bare spots. I am also going to replace all of the wood surronding the bay doors because it is rotted pretty bad.

Here's my priming job.

The nice thing about AutoZone is after they pull the code and the customer comes to you and tells you what to replace, and it doesn't fix it, it's their fault (but they'll blame you).

My actual cost is $19.08 but I rounded it down to look good.

Things are looking up. I have had a few people that tried to dictate what I am going to charge them. Unfortunately they were not a Burger Kings so they will get it my way or not at all. One guy wanted me to bleed the brakes on his 1991 s10 blazer. When I was pulling it in the shop it felt more like a brake adjustment issue. I had some problems getting the adusters to turn so I pulled the drums. Shazam! blown out wheel cylinder. Called customer informed him whats going on and the cost to fix it. Customer was mad that I pulled the drums and told be to fix the problem by bleeding the brakes or he's taking his truck. I told him I will put it back together for him because I'm not willing to work on it unless I make it safe. Fuck it. 91 POS and Grumpy owner. Not the kind of customer I'm trying to cultivate. I also had a lady bring in a 1981 Pontiac Bonneville that she said needed spark plugs and a catalytic converter. She had her own parts but I did not care. I get it up in the air (while running) and the converter is fine, the heat riser has a blown gasket. I tell her I will need to reschedule here because I will have to make the gasket to fix the exhaust. So next I put spark plugs in (Buick 3.8). I tell her that the spark plugs are not going to fix her problem, she needs a new carburetor. She informed me that somebody from the trailer park she lives in rebuilt it. I told her it's still bad but she wanted me to put the plugs in anyway. Fresh plugs installed and guess what? 30 year old Pontiac still runs like shit. Oh well, she was happy with the job and she may even come back for me to fix the exhaust.

Update: The exterior is painted and looks pretty good. New wood around the bay doors and new seals around the doors. The wind was blowing pretty hard the other day and I felt no draft whatsoever. I put up a 52" ceiling fan to help bring down some of the warm air from my 13' ceiliing.

I think painting the building has helped draw customers in. I get daily walk ins asking for quoates and many of them get their car fixed. So far I've very happy with the amount of traffic coming through the shop. I hope it keeps up.

I'll post some pictures of the outside in a day or two.

November was a good month. I've reinvested some of the money I made but I've also been able to take some money home for mama. At this point I have no outstanding balances for parts, the utilities are all paid, and I just have to pay a water bill tomorrow.

I'm finally sorta caught up. I have 194? Oliver crawler in there that the owner wants me to get running. I sent the starter out to be rebuilt and I'm going to do a valve job to it. I also have a trailer with a busted tounge and a bunch of other issues to take care of but I am waiting for the owner to bring me the rest of the parts. I have a few piddily jobs comming in tomorrow but you never know, some of them turn out to be money jobs.

I'm heading to the shop right now. If anybody wants to shoot the shit, have a beer, and watch me put a deck on a trailer, stop on in. Just walk in. The office is demolished because of remodling but the shitter looks pretty good.

Shop #662-7785 if you want to call first.
