02 explorer sensor testing

My buddy has an 02 explorer and the Overdrive Off light is flashing. A local dealer here said it was the torque converter. However after doing some reading online it looks like a lot of people have this and about half of the time it's the torque converter and the other half claim to have replaced a sensor or two on/around the tranny and that solved it.

There have been no drivability changes with the truck, just the light. Is there a way to test these sensors without replacing them like with an ohm meter or anything or have anyone of you guys had this issue?
