Default Collection at work Opinions/Thoughts please

I work at a University (But as a contractor for another company). Each year at Xmas, one of the directors blasts out this email to the team. They have a card, and only those who donate can sign it. Your opinions please:

Christmas is quickly approaching! It is time for me to send out my annual email about collecting gift money for Girl A and Girl B For those of you who are new this year, we collect and give a monetary gift to Girl A and Girl B to help them out at holiday time and to thank them for all they do to keep the office running smoothly and all they do for everyone all year long. We are part of the XX Department and they started the tradition of collecting for the office staff a long time ago. So they collect for Girl C and Girl D and Our Department collects for Girl A and Girl B and we want to give them equal gifts. So I hope all of you will participate in this Christmas gift giving tradition.

XX is requesting a donation of $50 from the faculty and we are requesting a donation of $25 from our staff. Just give me your donation at any time that is convenient for you. Try to get it to me by Dec. 14th so we can give it to them before the last minute. I donít have the cards yet but I will purchase a card for each of them soon so you can sign it when you donate.

I would tell him to donate himself, and I wouldn't give a penny.

Who are these girls? Cleaning crew? Secretaries?

Is it an unpaid position?

It seems strange that employees would pay for a fellow workers' bonus.

Wow, that really puts employees in an uncomfortable position.

Would you have given Girl A and Girl B a gift if not for the collection?

My thoughts:

constantly asking if this is correct or does it hurt your feelings is just raising a generation of complainers.

I think just about every company I have worked for does things like that.

If you want to donate, then donate
If you don't, don't
If you really don't like it, go talk to the guy
or get a new job

I just buy all of my employees equal gifts and the company gives them their bonuses. I don't understand?? are these people in need? We have been doing fundraisers for a man who's wife is slowly dying and he has two small children.
Again it's a donation, so you can either donate or not based on your opinion and own financial situation.

I have never worked for any company that has solicited donations other than GM pushing United Way. I told them no. My charity is my choice and no one else's.

Plant I work at Adopts a Family every year and you can contribute if you want to, some even buy gifts directly for the family. To set exact amounts for a person to donate seems a little presumptuous. Then again it is probably a liberal arts college so they are used to employees being sheeple. LOL

I don't like people telling me what to "give". Makes me feel like I am paying taxes.

Girl A and girl B can use brass pole C and make their own extra money. I give where I give, not where I'm demanded to give.

When I worked at Dow, they pushed United Way hard. I was pretty much ostracised every year because I didn't give. I don't respond well to peer/work pressure so the harder they pushed, the deeper I dug my heels in.

My work place pushes united way pretty hard too. I told my boss I couldn't make the meeting because had I gone it what have been a nice discussion about how the execs at a non profit make a shit ton of money and I'm not about to pay some millionaires salary with my donations. They can go fukc themselves. He told me not to come.

Yeah, I gave the first year because they said I could dedicate where I wanted my money to go and they would support a tour of my recipient of choice. I wanted to donate to the Boy Scouts. When I asked for my tour of the local facility, they said "oh, you're just trying to get time off of work" and didn't let me go. So, the next year I said no and I got pulled into my foreman's office to explain why. I told them and they responded with the same bullshit answer. So, I told them I would never donate to United Way again. I got a huge lecture because "it would impact our local donation goal". Tough shit!
