Default steering box fail....

On my way home from work lastnite the steering box seal in my 94 F150 let go.

Is it worth tryin to just replace the seal? I have read it can be a major PITA and some people say ts easier to just replace the box. I have a low mileage box off a 88 Ranger I could swap in if doing the seal is not worth it.

Opinions?

$145 for the box. $7.00 for the seal. Not sure. How many miles are on the box that is leaking?

my mechanic friends always say replace the box. the shaft may be wandering, new seal could get damaged during replacement, etc. mine leads badly, stop-leak products are not helping, very annoying. (95 jeep zj)

FWIW I've changed seals in 3 fords, 2 of them were a breeze and worked great. The third was a major pita and leaks still leaks a little.

The 2 that I changed that were easy were because the pitman came right off, the last one I had no torch so I had to beat the hell out if it to get the arm off. I probably tweaked the opening. If your arm comes off easily I wouldn't hesitate to change the seal it's the easy part.
