Default I picked a up a clean used sled.

i had a 1996 yamaha vmax xt 600 for the last few years. i payed $500 for it.
i sold it for $700.00 to a guy from ohio. i saved a little cash and started shopping for a clean used sled. i found a sweet deal and jumped on it. a clean sled, on a 1 place trailer, with a cover, tie downs, extra plugs, full of ves gold oil, full of premium gas, ready to ride $1200.00

i got a 1997 polaris xlt 600 limited. its a 600 triple, and in pristine condition.
its got 1575.4 miles on it. its all stock and in showroom condition.
i changed out the factory hyfax and carbides last weekend. also installed tunnel protectors so i can safely stud it. putting a 96 stud center pattern in it this week. it has electric start, and the extra 12 suspension on it.
it has no reverse however. i got it from a guy that was retired from gm.
the friend he rode with died, so he wanted rid of it. it was towed in his friends enclosed trailer. even the cover is like new, never seen salt or sun.

its not fast or exotic, but its in great shape, and i could not pass on it.
by far the cleanest sled i have owned.

i got a bunch more pics but my computer is smoked and wont upload them.

May not be the fastest or most exotic but, They are very nice riding and comfortable sleds, The extra 12 makes it that much nicer along with the $1200 price tag it can't be beat.

you are so full of shit, I can see rust on the exhaust. Anywho that thing is pretty clean and awfully ugly! I had the exact same model and year. Thankfully my hood cracked so I had an excuse to paint it! I have no tips for you as mine never broke. I replace the secondary clutch buttons every year, other than that it was gas and oil.

i have never seen a 15 year old sled with factory paint still on the exhaust.
its one of the cleanest "old" sleds i have ever seen. that has not been repainted.

im sure gas and oil is all it will need.

i wanted to "mod it" to get a little extra power from it, but very little is available for that body style.

i just put on 3" woodys e-z steer carbides, new hyfax, and tunnel protectors(that sucked).

i was gonna do 144 studs. its kinda overkill for a stock 600. i got 120 1" stud boy studs, but i like the 96 inside pattern better. i think im gonna take 24 back and swap them for extra oil.

i cant seem to find a pipe kit or even a can for an evolved chassis anywhere.
i can get power dome or thunderdome heads though.

should be a nice ride compared to the junk i been riding the last 6 or 8 years.

do not pipe or can it...it will get slower. you need to change you gears if you want more power out of it, however your top-end will suffer

gearing should be 21/39 now. i have heard of people dropping one tooth on top, or going to 20/40.

gear, clutch, and plastic skis sounds good. i think i got a set of 19/39's in the garage now.

I regeared my edge last winter, and it made a HUGE diffirence. Top end definetally suffered, but it was worth it more than anything. My neighbor had an xcr 800 which is about just as clean, and it fricken RIPS. But it is loud as hell.

dropping one tooth on the small sprocket is like adding three to the big

Nonsense,it's a blt with an extra light triple, same motor as a xcr, dont care what chassie it is in,the proper pipes/can with jetting and airbox mods will help. You can gear it down if you want, but the xtra 12 already robs a little top end. It's never gona be fast but a can, jetting, and most impotantly, clutch work will wake it up a little.
I was never a fan of the extra 12 when it came out,one of my freinds exploded a shock in the skid,we spent most of our vacation driving around the up trying to find a new shock. We could buy a fox shock,or anything else for a extra 10,but not the 12.this was in the late ninties,so obviously parts are available now.
I agree 96 studs in the center of the track for stoping is all you need with a blt.

RONG!!! but what ever sounds like you know best so have at it....there is not much you can do to get power out of the 600xlt...the 650 on the other hand there is plenty you can do

i can send you lot's of pictures of my new sled after i pick it up next fri.. if that helps any...

i cant wait to just sit on it..last time i bought a new one i had 48 miles on it before it snowed.

i had a new xlt in 95. just gear it and clutch it. the clutch is what you will gain a bunch from if done right.

i hate to say this but i agree with honcho..waist of money to put pipes on it.will run like shit or blow up.

i got this... just bought some new white usi ski's,white hand guards, under seat bag and a white skid plate..
my buddy got the same thing he went with the same stuff but his skis, guards and skid are red.

I hope I'm home this winter. We've had snow here at work for well over a month now. I am SO ready to get home and ride. I was home for a week a week ago, I bought new carbides and a pair of gloves that I didn't need, just so I had an excuse to play with my sled.

This

And this are waiting patiently for me to come home and shred.

This is such an old sled,I dont really care, and im sure no one else does, but just to clear this up.yes if you put the wrong pipes on a monoblock motor, and clutch it to run in the wrong rpm range,it may not run well, and it may blow up.On the other hand if you put the correct can/jets/clutching so it runs in the proper rpm range, you can pick up some usable power.just do the research,I cant remember what rpm causes the bad harmonics, that spit crankshafts out,and take out the cases,it's been so long since we messed with theese motors.I have rebuilt a shitload of these motors, back in the day, and I always welded the crank,no more problems.
But like I said before, clutching and jetting is the best bang for your buck.
To anyone that says you will lose power by putting a pipe on it,how many have you built?
Google flannery polaris in gun lake mi. Or google Doug flannery, michigan motorsports hall of fame.I have had the pleasure to race with, and against Doug, and he can make a monoblock do amazing things.Do a little researce, see how many flannery mono blocks have raced/won around the world, check the soo 500 for example.Long before polaris gave us domestic twins, they gave us the monoblock, thats all we had,so we had to make it run, with pipes, and not blow up.If pipes and jetting wont help a xlt,why did the xcr come with bigger carbs/pipes? Dont confuse the piston port/reed motors,i know they were different.

good grief...the xcr has stock pipes...while different than the standard xlt pipe, they are still factory. you start messing with aftermarket pipes and that motor will not like it. even the domestic twins do not like being piped or canned. the factory has done a fantastic job with the exhaust changing it only hurts the motor, unless you are trying to hit a target rpm range...other than that leave it alone. you get you best performance out of clutching and gearing the poo-poo's
