Default SOLD: 97 TJ 4.0 with AW4 4" lift 33's $3,500

For Sale. - a couple years back my son and I did a 4.0/AW4 swap into his 97 TJ that originally had a 2.5. College expenses and the need for a more economical car. $3,500. Will Consider trades for Subaru or similar AWD cars. Here are the specifics:
  • 97 TJ
  • 160,000 ish miles as i recall
  • Swapped in a 4.0 - I dont recall the miles on it at the time, but as I recall it was less than the TJ had.
  • AW4 tranny from a 92 XJ. Works PERFECT! The AW4 swap is a ton of work, but well worth it.
  • 4.10 axles (stock - came OEM with the original 2.5 liter 4 banger)
  • 4" lift
  • Swaybar quick disconnects
  • CV rear drive shaft custom built
  • Super Short SYE on stock T-case
  • Over $1500 in front end work within the last year
  • Recent alternator, battery starter and fuel pump
  • 33x12.50x15 Cooper STT's on Jeep aluminum rims
  • Hard top
  • hard door uppers on 1/2 doors
  • soft top - but it is kinda rough, with soft door uppers with slider windows

I know I will think of more details . It has been a good runner - though ever since the engine swap has always tended to need to crank longer than I would expect - always starts, just seems to not fire up immediately. Did replace almost, if not all the various sensors. Front left fender has rust in the typical spot, also on the right rear corner below the taillight. Floor on drivers side did have a hole that was patched. Interior has been Rhino Lined. After the swap we never were able to dial out the vibes - and for some reason the vibes did recently get worse. My guess is there is a dry U-Joint in one of the shafts - the Jeep sat almost all summer as he drove is motorcycle or walked to work.

I dont have any current pictures, but will see if I can dig up some older ones I do have. It is located in Marquette right now.

I found a picture from about 2 years ago (August 2009). It has a bit more wear and tear now, but not to horrible. If there is serious interest, I can get some up to date pictures taken.

That thing should sell in a heartbeat for $3500. If the swap is well done and the vibes are an easy fix I bet you could get at least $5k for it without too much trouble.

yikes...I should of tossed out a higher price to start with! I have a few PMs I do need to follow up on - however it turned out my box was filled - so messages from Robo-3, ssjeepfreek and Hopperdog did not go through. Sorry about that. I will try to follow up in the order posts made or PM's sent. Rubilooe gets the holeshot award though having messaged me first.

I followed up with my son - he is now 100% sure he wants to sell. I will also do some more brain picking of my son to be sure we get all the issues out on the table right up front. I dont want anyone to think this is in a creampuff of a TJ because it is not. The picture I posted does look better than it does now - not that it is all smashed up or anything. It is however one hell of a great starting point.

As to the 4.0 and AW4 swap - the welding work done for the engine mounts was done by Sam - dont recall last name - real active over on Michigan Wheelers hell of a nice guy and a hell of a professional welder, former professional engineer/metalurgist as I understand it. (he does or then did welding on pressurized gas well pipelines - I swear he could weld 2 sticks of butter together) The transfer case mounts were re-clocked so it mounts up like a stock TJ (otherwise would hang down much further). The T-case input shaft was cut to the proper length. The wiring work was many hours of research on line - and very neatly and nicely done - all in a nice harness, tranny computer mounted under the dash. Works absolutely like it should and would in a stock XJ. Best "reference" I can provide is that my son is currently working as a research assistant and is turned loose on $250,000 pieces of bio-mechanics testing equipment to sort out wiring and computer issues. (he did have a great teacher on this stuff...his old man! ;^P) To the "untrained eye", the engine compartment would be hard to tell it was anything other than a stock 4.0 install. We did compression test the 4.0 before the install - I dont recall the numbers now, but they were absolutely fine and well within specs. We did put in some new bottom end bearings and a high volume oil pump after the install. I also forgot to mention a new 3 or 4(?) core radiator and new water pump were installed as well.

Meanwhile, I know I have some pictures from when the install was first done that I will post.

I dug up a few more pics from during the install work. At this time it had a 2.5" lift on it and 31's. In the pic of the engine compartment, the wiring for the AW4 had not been finished yet - hence the blue wires in the upper left corner. And a pic of the wiring harness we fabricated to tie in the AW4 computer into the proper signals on the TJ computer. and a pic of the new mount holes in the tranny to reclock the t-case. For what it is worth, we relied heavily on Stu-offroad.com for info on the tranny swap.

oh - forgot to answer bmrwolfe's question - as far as I know frame is solid. When we did the swap, it did have normal seeming surface rust, but I could see no damage or rust throughs or any other issues.

Default Not just a Feeler now...FOR SALE

I finally reached my son - yes it is for sale.

Big Ugly - nice looking grand, but he really needs to go with a small fuel efficient vehicle that is good in snow. Subarus or other AWD cars are of particular interest.

Robo - I will call you this evening. SS - Send me your phone # via PM and we can discuss this evening. Rubilooe had PMed me first and I will also be following up with him via phone this evening. Calls will be sometime after 7 PM.

Gotta go slip slide away to work.....

Surprising. This looks like one of those deals that gets scooped up in a day.

Rob - I agree - and I thought it had been, but Robo-3's "deal pending" post was a bit premature unfortunately. Evidently some expenses came up he had not considered.

SS - I will let you know once it is back below the bridge. Hopefully that will be Tuesday.
