Exclamation dog got skunked

Let the dog out late just before turning in and he got into it with a skunk...little fight but then took the whole spray on his neck...all I smell is the over powering smell of the skunk on and in everything now.....

I used goo gone and viniger than shampooed the dog...seems to have got the oils off the dog..didn't have many options on the fly at 1130 at night

All we smell and think is that everything stinks so we don't know if the smell is really leaveing or not

Any help/ ideas would be great to help.

In the plastic container, combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap (Dawn).
Add lukewarm water if needed (for larger dogs). Mix ingredients well. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately - do not store.

This really works well. When dumb ass tangled with a skunk, I washed him down and he was good to go.
He then ran right back outside and found the same skunk again. Yep, he got another douche with the mixture. Good Luck.

This works. The only problem we had was that we were cautious about getting the mixture in our dog's eyes and nose. So for months, every time his face got wet, there was a lingering smell.

You can also use the darkest coffee you can find. Fill the filter to the top and make a pot. Allow to cool and use as a wash. Helps with the stink. I use this along with th dish soap, peroxide, baking soda stuff on my coon hounds.

you can use vaseline and cover around their eyes to prevent it from getting in there

None of the things above worked for me, but taking the dog to the groomer did work.

Vinegar can be used in place of the hydrogen peroxide in the mixture with baking soda and dish soap, as I've heard the the peroxide can turn the dog's hair white.

Also, Odoban is great for taking the smell out of anything the dog came in contact with.

same thing happened to my dog...the smell up close is unbelievable...I thought she rolled in some kinda of chemical.. then she ran upstairs and rolled in my room on her bed. that smell lingered for a few days even after washed.. ,it stung our eyes when she first came in.

skunk spray is an oil. washing your dog or anything else in something that will not break down the oil no smell will be removed. period. you need to use a detergent soap, degreaser, lestoil, anything that will break down the oil to remove it successfully. the recipe above works well. to get the stink out of your house boil pots of white vinegar.

thanks for all the help everyone, i used a degreaser the first night, but you can still smell it every now and then, i have about a dozen glasses of viniger around the house and i boiled some too. Looking at the science behind it really the only thing to get rid of it is oxygen which takes times. its getting better saould be all gone by the end of the week
