Default NP 233/231 help

Ok I broke a front axle shaft at R&V the other weekend and just ratchet strapped the shaft in order to keep fluid in the diff. No big deal except the front shaft spun enough to break the ratchet strap. I first thought this was due to a bad lock out on the other side, but I pulled the lock out and I am still breaking ratchet straps. Then I remembered that the shafts rotates slightly as you turn so I used a bungee, to allow for stretch when the axle rotates. This also didn’t work, so I pulled the front drive shaft and everything has been fine since.

So what did I do to my transfer case to cause it to not disengage all the time? I can spin it by hand when I’m parked leading me to think that it is in 2hi. But this obviously this isn’t the case, as there is enough force to break the straps/ bungees.

The 233 is very similar to the 231 except it is electronically shifted. So much so that I used a 231 front output, yoke, and seal on my case. So hopefully you jeep guys can help me out.

Any Ideas?

Is your tcase still push button? If so a lot of the time on the 233 it will be between 2hi and 4hi do to lack of vacuum there is a cable under your battery tray you can pull back and will fully put it in 2hi if I remember correctly

The vacuum actuator is controlled by a transfer case mounted switch, this is used to engage the CAD. The transfer case does not use vacuum for shifting ranges, the vacuum is only used to run the CAD. So with me having a solid axle, the vacuum has nothing to do with the transfer case engaging randomly.

It's probably just the viscosity of the fluid in the transfer case causing the front output to still turn slightly. I've heard of this being the case and I would assume that coupled with the additional gear reduction of your axle gearing it's just enough to break it. That's just a guess though....

hmm it could be that, combined with some drag from the bearings. To cause the strap to break, it was only a harbor freight strap so Iím sure it didnít take much.

Well there's the problem! Whenever I buy something from there I always ask myself why I just did it. It ends up in the scrap bin/trash before I know it

Warn nylon fittings on the shift fork, allowing the ring to partally engauge?
How quickly is this happening? Those Ford lockouts are famous for sticking. Could it be a Sharp edge "sawing" at the strap? Spool limited or open? I could look but my internet is slow. You need any 231/233 parts I have em.

Edit: fluid viscosity or lose engaugement ring I see you have a spool. BTW I have 2 shrot side and one long side f150 shaft for you can't find any good stubs.

Yeah true, I don't know why I bought them there, just to save a buck I guess. But I always end up replacing/upgrading their junk and spend more money in the long run.

If it is the engagement ring would it act like its in 2 while sitting still? I donít remember from when I had the case apart, but Iím sure its worn with all the miles on it.

Sending you a pm about the shafts

I would think that you would hear it clunk or grind if you were driving when the hubs are unlocked, do you hear a loud snap when the straps break or just notice them dangleing?

Just notice them dangling, or when the shaft comes out and locks up the steering... thatís a fun one

This makes me think its just rubbing through the strap.
