Side note. Back in some old days, car engines slightly speced out to watercraft use were used as back-up generators. I've seen something like that engine in Mass. My uncle had an odd engine in his mountain cabin/home.

Well....you're about 25% correct.

Most (if not all) cast iron Ford v-8's have the dizzy in the front of the engine. That said, they aren't that far forward on the timing cover. The dist. on a Ford V-8 is only about 1/2" or so from the intake manifold. Also, the Ford distributor is pretty much vertical, not canted like the engine in question.
