Default Ford 9" "Nascar" Detroit locker

Has anyone on here ever heard if the Detroit Lockers on ebay are any good that are supposedly taken out of the Nascars. Im redoing my gear set (R&P shot) and figure while its apart i might as well throw one in if there worth it. There only $300.

I don't know anything about it but it looks pretty cool. If you buy one keep everyone informed on how it works etc. .

There was some discussion a while about them on pirate. I remember something about them being setup a little differently than the standard models you would buy. I dont remember exactly what it was but a search in gen 4x4 should get you some answers.

If I remember correctly, they are different in the way they unlock. I think power is always going to the outside tire and the inside tire unlocks in turns. So it doesnt provide full differential action and right turns might be weird. But I wouldnt know if that locker is like that.

i had one in my last tj. got it used for 180 shipped from dei racing through ebay.
the difference is in the internal spring rate. mine had a brand new set of black springs.
it was locked up real tight. it would almost never ratchet. i was told they could be changed out for softer springs, like a detroit soft locker would have. they use a real soft spring rate for racing. it would unlock really easily. i was also told some use a weird ring and pinion gear, others do not. depends on how it was made. mine used standard gears.

im no locker expert, just what i was told?? take it for what its worth.

I notice the description says "light weight". There are some ultralite lockers out there that are made for use with an ultralite gear set. Might want to make sure it's not one of these.

If I hadn't read it, and known you posted in it, I'd have had a hard time finding it...

i think the "light weight" is in there bc of the scalloped edge where the ring gear bolts...how instead of being round the metal is cut out between the holes. but again i could be wrong just trying to find ppl experiences thanks for the help

Just be cautious of anything called a "Race Locker". Many are only half of a locker! To save weight, the left side "clutch" is left out of many designs. Therefore, only the right axle shaft is able to disengage in corners. They are also not a "soft locker". The race teams want the re-lock immediately for traction out of corners. The weight savings someone mentioned is (mostly) from the scallops around the ring gear bolts holes (as someone else speculated).

Point - A typical oval track "race locker" of Nascar style is a very bad choice for off-road driving.

since i posted this i have had one installed in my Jeep...i love it...it locks up instantly when i need it but still unlocks easily when im driving the street and rounding corners...for the price invested i couldnt be happier
