Talking Project Identity Theft: '93 "ZJ"

As some of you may have heard, Tim (SandVipr) and I struck a deal and I am the proud new owner of his old ZJ. This is the reason for the project name, if you see "Sinister 1" out and about, I'm not Tim . But stop and say hi anyway. The purpose of this thread is more of a chronicle of wheel, break, upgrade than a totally new build. Tim did an awesome job on this rig and it really is a point and shoot rig as it sits now. There are some mods and upgrades that I want to do to make it "mine" though and I hope to start on those soon.

Latest build thread:
http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=161863

Current state:

Body:
180K on the ticker
Full cage .120 wall DOM
boat sides made from .120" tubing and .185 steel diamond plate
Extra fenders, pass rear door, and rear quarter- just needs to be installed and painted
sub-frame reinforced with 3x5 1/4 wall angle- it's the main tie-in point for the lower suspention links. I've never had any issues with them. It has created a great mounting platform for everything.

Suspension:
18" stretch +4" in the front and + 14" in the rear
Full .250 wall links for all suspention and steering links
Johnny jounts at 7 points at the axles
Deaver soft ride coils in the front
Skyjacker front coils in the rear
15" travel Pro Comp hydro shocks
Approximately 20" forced articulation in the front and 16" in the rear.
long story short- it flexes big time!!!!
beard limit straps

Steering:
full hydro includes new PSC pump, recently rebuilt orbital, all the best lines and fittings from Holland PT, custom aluminum resivour, cooler, and single ended ram. Had a few bugs to get worked out over the last year, but I beleve I have them all worked out now. has performed flawlessly on the last couple times out.

Axles:
Front '90 Ford BJ '60 dualey set-up with the dual piston calipers
5.38's
Welded diff
good Ford lock-outs
stock shafts- never even broke a u-joint yet.....
rear-
'91 14-bolt (extra webbing cast in for added strength)
5.38's
welded diff
SRW hubs
Chevy 3/4 ton calipers and rotors
XJ booster and E350 M/C= stops great (as long as they are not packed full of mud)

Interior:
Pretty stripped down to the basics
racing buckets
4-points
roof console still installed and works great
tube doors
Cheap CB
Back seat is still installed and functional
gas tanked moved up into rear hatch area for rear diff clearence due to axle stretch

Motor-
Stock with cold air intake and 3" single exhaust tucked up nice and tight to the floor.
Taurus 2-speed fan- works great!

Smittybuilt 8K winch only used a few times.
Custom built stinger and integrated winch mounting plate

Tires/Wheels:
H1 double beadlocks with PVC inserts and rock rings for strength
42" TSL's

I have been wheeling it at R&V for a few weekends now and am finally starting to learn how to handle it. It makes my very poor driving skills look good. So far the carnage has been fairly limited but it includes:

-7/10/11 Beadlock PVC insert straps broke allowing bead to blow out. (Fixed and at the same time replaced a broken stub shaft, u-joint, and spindle)
-7/16/11 Lost a hitch pin on the steering ram, noticed a leak from the hydraulic fluid resivoir. Smashed in the drivers side rear door and quarter to match the other side . (replaced the hitch pin and got some extras for spares. Retaped the fitting going into the resivoir but it didn't help)
-7/23/11 Backed into a tree on the Hump trail and put a major hurt on the taillight. If this is the extent of the damage from a pretty hard trail, who needs to upgrade.

So future plans include wheeling it for the rest of the year as is. This winter I want to modify it somewhat to make it mine.
-Tube doors for the rear
-Modify stock doors so that they can be put back on for winter wheeling
-Get a stock hatch, make it into a bulkhead, and chop the roof off after the C-pillar (not sure on this yet I like the look but I just don't know if it's right for me)
-Tie the cage into the boatsides
-fab a radiator guard
-move the winch down some so that some air can get to the radiator
-231/300 doubler (this is a little beyond my skill set at the moment, but some lower gearing is a must down the road)

That pretty much sums it up to this point.

This is the only pic I have right now since my camera took a dump but look for many wheeling updates in the near future. It'll be at Pig Gig @ R&V on the 6th and 7th of August and the NAGCA run the following weekend.

Got some amazing wheeling in @ R&V this weekend. Flopped it on Big Ugly, broke the drivers rear window out on Python, and broke my drivers side stub and lockout on the first 5' of the lot crawl. Didn't get any pics of the wheeling but the after math is this.

Oh yeah. New stub should already be on it's way. I have a spare lockout already. It'll be back together by Thursday for sure.

I'm glad you guys are OK after hearing about the flop. I see the cage is doing it's job.

That thing will look great after your mods this winter. You are definately taking the torch and running with it. I can't wait to see it in the spring!

Not on Saturday, I camped at the park friday and saturday nights. Is there someone trying to steal my identity now?

Yeah, the cage held tough. The mods this winter all depend on me finding a house with a garage big enough to get this thing in. If I don't it'll probably be the following winter. On a side note, after the flop the fuel cell moved way up on the list. I don't like the smell of raw fuel while laying on my side against a dirt wall with no way out except through the guy hanging above me (he looked like he could have kicked my ass if he wanted to too).

Yeah he was at the park (at least I assume it was him). 40" boggers and a much more stock body then mine. It was his shakedown run. He had some problems with keeping cool but he said otherwise it went well. He might be back for the Grand Slam this weekend.

Thanks! Yeah hopefully I don't have to replace the body right away. The way it's been going since I got it that might happen sooner rather than later.

LOL, I'm thinking of adding a stinger to the stinger. I want like a 12' looking thing off the front of my Jeep.

We shall see, I kinda like it in a zombie apcolypse sorta way. It will probably become smaller if anything.
