Default 79 Ford, building a 400m

Might be picking up a 1979 Ford pickup with a 400m. I know they are turds from the factory, it already has MSD ignition, just wondering how much an intake, cam and headers with decent exhaust will wake it up?

I could only imagine what a cam would do for it, pm me if you want, i have a 400 with 30 over flat top pistons, 4barrel intake and rv cam with gaskets, oil pump to put it all together

Well the 400M is a beefier version of the Cleveland, which supposedly got banned from various racing organizations. Every account from people who've actually built one claims to make stupid power out of them.

Here's my plan
I know these motors wake up with a few $$$$$$ thrown at them, just wondering if this is a good start.
Weiand Intake mamifold
Weiand 8010 - Weiand Action+Plus Intake Manifolds - Summit Racing Equipment
Camshaft
Summit Racing SUM-5201 - Summit Racing® Camshafts - Summit Racing Equipment
Or
Summit Racing SUM-5200 - Summit Racing® Camshafts - Summit Racing Equipment
Headers
Flowtech 12520FLT - FlowTech Headers - Summit Racing Equipment
This is just a quick cheap list, please tel me if this will run good, or if I need to change what I'm doing up.

are you sure it's actually a 400 and not a 351?

I ask because only about 30% of trucks actually had a 400m, and every one who buys a late 70s truck seems to think they have the 400, or list it as the 351/400, or calls it a 400 modified.

would you be taking the motor apart or just bolting parts on? Compression is key with these motors and intake and cam will help some, they still had real low compression from the factory.
Also, i agree on making sure its a 400 and not a 351. ITs easy to convert though, you just swap out the crank and pistons.

I was going to suggest taking it apart to fix the compression but didn't think of it till now, but I got beat to it anyways.

Late 70's engines got real shady in order to meet "The Mans" emission requirements. CR's dropped off the face of the planet and they didn't go about it the right way either.

The pistons in my 1978 250ci Ford I6 are no less than A QUARTER OF AN INCH from the top of the deck. Yup, 1/4" of cylinder wall is showing.

But your engine might be different since it was for a truck and not a car.

Years ago Car Craft did a build similar to what you are describing and claimed about 400HP & 450 ft lbs of torque. My 78 F150 would smoke mid 80's 5.0 stangs & irocs. I started with a 71 400 that had a little better compresion than the later ones.
