Default Preproduction cars in my area?

I was driving the work car today on the freeway when I see about six cars. Four are unmarked having those goofy covers over them, the other two were newer Buick Lacrosses I think. All had MI manufacturer plates. They were literally bumper to bumper driving, probably to avoid many good photos to be taken. There was a newer Camaro in the bunch too, not sure if he was just there to piss off the other cars or if he was actually in the group. I did not get any photos.
I have never seen this down here. I used to see it in MI obviously, and through the Rockies in CO, but not down here. Why were they here in San Diego?

Maybe they were testing new bullet proof glass and knew their odds of getting shot at by a road rager was greater there.

Probably.

Or, a local 3rd party manufacturer is field testing equipment on their home turf.

These guys seemed like serious business. They were literally bumper to bumper. In MI it seems like people drive those cars like it's no big deal until you snap a shot of their car.

Divisions of my employer have cars all over the country. A group just flew out west this week.
They go out there for the different terrain, climates, altitudes and what not. Or if a high number of warranty claims come from a certain area. All sorts of different stuff really.

I thought that at first, but the cars were headed from the 8 freeway west toward the beach. They could have hit the 5 south to Mexico but it seems like a lot of work and they would be sitting at the border for a long time.
I thought maybe they were headed 5 north to L.A. but I'm not sure.

my guess is it was the automated cruise control testing if they were as close as you say they were. GM has been testing that out in that area for over 15 years now. I remember seeing that from time to time when I was out that way normally not in camo though...

I say this because VW is releasing hands free cruise control in the coming year so GM might be trying to step up there game

Cali has a pretty strong auto industry, a lot of stuff goes on out there.

They could have just been doing anything from Testing Navigation units, killing time during desert testing, or just been cruising for chicks/dudes.

I've just never seen those cars out here ever. Doesn't make sense to test the cars out here in a place that hates automobiles with a passion though. Unless they were testing new features to protect against crappy drivers and a ton of traffic.

I thought the there were a few proving grounds out in Cali, Arizona area that most of the bigger car manufactures used to do testing....

GM Proving grounds are in Yuma, AZ. Hot trip testing is performed around Cali and Death Valley all the way up to Vegas. Sea level testing is performed around the shore line in Cali, especially around San Diego since it's relatively close to Yuma.

Back in March we were hill testing in Baker and saw tons of Michigan M plates, several cars on fire, and numerous broke down rigs. Perfect place for us to test.

They are highly likely testing the adaptive cruise control systems. Camaro and LaCrosse are part of the same 'Family 3', as is that other car thats still masked. Completely unrelated to that masked car, I wonder if their trip through Cali is taking them through MALIBU.

I did the clusters for all 3 cars, including the display/lights for the ACC system thats getting ready to launch.

I see what you did there.

1. COnfirmed your almighty knowledge of engineering.
2. subtle hint.
