are you wondering how the jeep is going to go now with no axle?

I am definitely liking this build. I have a girl and two boys myself. I plan on a build starting in October when I get back from Iraq and hope to include atleast my oldest son.

Thanks Mike. It's going slowly, but that's just fine given how long we have for the project.

Well, I originally planned on giving Mira her first welding lesson while welding a Ballistic Fabrication skull on her Dana 44 differential cover. She's with her mom this weekend, though, and I was itchy do do some welding. I'll have her help with the axle bracketry instead, as that'll be coming up before long. I should have my '05 LJ Dana 44 pulled within a week or two in preparation for my D70U install (photo HERE), and will be reworking that with XJ brackets.

So, here's Mira's "hardcore" diff cover after some primer (top coat to come soon). It's stamped with a 1987 date, and is the HD style (1/8" thick). It'll give her more protection than the thinner D44 cover that came stock on the LJ.

The donor '05 LJ rear Dana 44 is now pulled.

I have the necessary XJ spring perches and shock mounts...just need to get the TJ/LJ brackets removed. I also want to build an axle stand/jig prior to doing this. I'm also considering a T&T Customs truss prior to install, as the LJ D44 tubes aren't overly stout.

Another thing to note is that the pinion length on the Dana 44 looks to be almost identical to that of the 8.25 axle that came out of the XJ, so we should be set with our driveshaft length.

I picked up a nice
OEM XJ front skid plate from jbsjunk
tonight. It's very clean, especially given its age (1986). This isn't the one I bought, but I wanted to show what it looks like installed.

Here's Mira & the Sawzall vs. the LJ Dana 44. We ended up getting the passenger upper control arm bracket and coil bucket removed. More progress to come tomorrow, hopefully. Mira was a trooper today given the heat we've been having here in Michigan.

Thanks guys, knowing dad, I probably out wheel him since he's always scratching up his precious Jeep with trees.

I submitted reader's rebuild information to Jp magazine for a contest on your Jeep in progress. We also entered an Eastwood contest. Winner gets $100 dollars in free paint. Cool huh?!

It would be very cool, but what color would you pick?

If I did win we would use the paint for touch-ups on the underside of the jeep instead of the body.

Mira's T&T Customs truss arrived. Here's a glamour shot. I have the axle about 1/2 "naked". All brackets are removed, but I still have to grind about 50% of the original welds smooth. The truss is a nice-looking piece, and beefy. I'll probably be talking with chadcooper55 about doing the finish welding; I'm not comfortable using my 115V Miller MIG for such thick plate.

Guess what showed up on the door step today? All of this Eastwood product, compliments of Matt at Eastwood. Thanks for the sponsorship, Matt. Mira & I both appreciate it greatly!
