Default 92 F150 Gas gauge not working

Gas gauge on my 92 will only read 'empty' no matter what. I thought the sending unit was fucked but a few weeks ago I hit a bump and the gauge started reading normal again out of nowhere, then a half hour later it went back to empty again. Been on empty ever since. Anyone know what would cause this? Loose wire maybe?
