Default The value of a 98 Chevy 4x4 w/ bad trans.

So I have an opportunity to buy a 98 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 4.3 6 cylinder & Automatic transmission. The tranny is bad I'm told, it has 116,000 miles on it. It's a single cab long box with work truck interior, there are no spots rusted through anywhere. The tires are junk, they are rollers- there's 225-75-16's on the right side & 245-75-16's on the left- someone bought the good tires so they put rollers on it. It has an aluminum utility topper on it with a full door on the back & contractor doors on the sides. It belongs to a plumbing/heating company so it was fleet maintained. My question is what is this truck worth? It has been sitting for well over a year, and the tranny and tires are junk. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

I wouldnt pay more than $500 for it, but it would have to be clean! real clean. Its a $1200 work truck fixed, IMO.

Since it has been sitting for a year I would not even think about buying it, when a vehicle sits that long it causes seals to dry out and crack causing leaks. Not to mention you cant test drive it so it might have a whole bunch of other problems!

With only 116,000 and it needs a tranny,i suspect it wasnt maintained very well.with no rust,id consider $1000 top dollar if it's really nice, not a dented up work truck.sitting for a year means replacing brakes and belts, probobly all the fuel lines as well.
The thing is worth $400 in scrap im pretty sure, and cash for clunkers screwed the whole used car market.it's worth what you are willing to pay.

maybe its just my luck but i have had two blazers with the 4l60e and one started slipping around 100k and the other wouldnt shift into 3rd with around 115k.
After sitting for a year the lines and belts should be fine depending on conditions prior to sitting. It will need new rotors and pads though.

Thanks for all the input thus far everybody. I ended up contacting the guy who owns it & he wants 1,200 for it. It is still sitting there. That's too much for what I want to do with it, so I'll keep waiting the guy out!

That is way too much...with gas at $4 a gallon people are quickly realizing there junk is not worth as much as they thought it was. I am finding all kinds of good deals on fullsize 4x4's right now...I even found a ZR2 pickup for $1000 and it don't look like it is in bad shape and it runs and drives.
