Default tj auto vs. manual

i have a 98 tj 4.0 manual trans i have heard that having an automatic makes some crawling easier and i would like my wife to be able to take it for a spin once in a while also. My question is wether an automatic for a tj would be stronger or weaker and what kind of stuff i would need to change besides flywheel, trans cooler, shifter, torq converter... and what else. my trans keeps popping out of reverse and kinda stiff going into a couple of the gears so checking before i buy.

If you are going to use a automatic use one out of a xj.

Read this one first.

Teach her to drive stick. The auto might help here and there but you loose your engine braking capability. If you need a new trans the nv4500 is very strong. I could never put an auto in a Jeep (curently doing a 2.8L diesel swap and having custom parts made for the NSG370). But that is just me, I'm a manual guy all the way.

My build thread "two ton shit missle" has a bit of info on the aw4 swap I did. If you search here there are a lot of other threads about the swap too with some good info. FYI I did have great compression braking with the auto (but I'm probably a lot lower geared than you) until I switched to the raddesigns stand alone shifter. Then I did loose the compression braking but I have good brakes so it doesnt really matter.

I had a 5 speed in my 1st jeep, 33's budget lift( mine started popping out of gear after lift ). LOVED it! When I decided to sell that and get a crawler I was hell bent on getting another stick shift. MANY people , even those with sticks, encouraged me to get an auto. If she is going to be doing any kind of trails and isn't VERY comfortable with driving a stick...then make it an auto. I bought an automatic and have never regretted it and am glad, for once in my stubborn ass life, I listened. I was good with a stick on light trails and dunes but I drove Erins 5 speed at the badlands once and we both agreed that wasnt gonna happen again.

Oh...and for those that don't know.....yes, i'm a girl.

every vehicle I have ever owned, except my XJ, has been a manual.

you can't out shift a machine, and I wanted that for when both hands needed to be on the wheel.

The 3 speed autos don't like water. Fyi.

just took a swim with mine yesterday up to the hood so it looks like it will be a rebuild on the ax 15 but what about the nv3550 is it a direct bolt in?

I have wheeled both autos and manuals on TJs
03 Auto
04 5 speed
06 6 speed

Of the 3 I prefer the 6 speed. I have no issues with a manual, and there were several times with the auto I wished I has a manual. In fact I traded in the 03 for an 04 to get a manual. I listened to people when I was going from my 5 speed XJ to a TJ and regretted it. On one occasion I know I would have flipped backwards, and the only thing that saved me was a quick clutch in. I could not have shifted into neutral as quickly.
