Default My New 91 EX500

Just bought this from a guy on here. Very Excited! Not sure what I want to do with the look yet. Need to get it running, which I almost did today. Doing a better job on Carb cleaning and seeing what I can get her to do.

Got it running for a second today. Totally looking forward to getting it running well and then riding this summer.

Not sure if I want the front Fairing or not. I was planning on going with the whole thing intill I saw it today after working on it for a while. I just thought it looked sweet kind of bare with out the front. Kind of a Street fighter look.

I guess if any of you veterans have opinions, I'd appreciate it. Is it worth it to have a Windshield/Front valance? or does it not matter?

I don't think I do. I might even be dropping the lower plastic all together and running it more "Street fighter" style. Thanks for the off though. I'm really excited to get it up and running well. Last night I got it to back fire.

3/14/2011 Happy Pie (3.14) Day

Played with it a bit today and last week.

-Got a new battery
-Cleaned out the carbs a couple times. Probably will be doing it agian with help from the compresed air at the bus garage.
- Got the Bulbs in the dashboard all squared away so they go to the right indicators. Found out I have low oil.
- Head light/tail light/blinkers all work.

Wierdest thing happened on Saturday. I tried to fire it up (like I had been for a while now) and it would fire on both cylinders, just very slowly. Like boom, half a second, boom, half a second, boom, ETC. Very consistently. I'm hoping the low oil pressure/oil volume in the engine may be the culprit. I was stupid enough not to check that yet.

I'll be ordering a Used radiator off Ebay sometime this week. Slicks in mason didn't have one at thier store and the only bike they could pull it off was in a very wet field I guess. I'll be going back there for a clutch lever pretty soon. They are great guys there, If you ever need parts, they know thier stuff.

April 5th, 2011.

Things I've done since my last update.

- Changed the oil - It was gross and 1 1/2 quarts low
- Ordered/installed a newish Fairing stay.
- Cleaned out the carbs a couple more times.
- Installed an inline fuel filter to keep the fuel float valves from clogging
- Received/installed the new radiator - Still need a Fan switch to go in it.
- Temporarily plugged the fan switch place on the radiator with a bolt and
- Filled up the cooling system with Coolant.
- Took the carbs apart one more time to just to make sure they were clean (they weren't, the fuel petcock has a very sharp nipple that shaves pieces of rubber off the fuel line and they end up in the float bowl valves. That's why I installed the fuel filter)
- Put the front fairing on it's stay with the headlight and Speedo in place.
- Bought some front flush mount turn indicators for the front fairing.

I fired it up after putting everything back together and it started right up. I had the choke down, like usual, and it actually revved when I had the choke on so I took it off and it idled great. Both sides firing and heating up like they should. I let it run like that for about 3 min and then tried the throttle. It bogged down and almost stalled when I got to 4k. Fiddled with the Pilot screws a bit and still nothing. It eventually died. X2.

I haven't synced the carbs yet and I'm hoping that maybe I just need to do that to get it to rev up past 4k. It sounded really good when it was idling though. I was excited! This thing is going to be on the road quicker then I thought!

Played with it for a while yesterday and got it running well. Still stumbles at 5-6k. I'm thinking I still need to play with the Pilot screws. Cleaned up the front Fairing with some simple green, installed the New front Turn indicators, got excited. I mounted the Front fairing a while ago. Got a new front fairing stay (can't remember if I posted that already).

The biggest part of this update is I actually rode it! Down the drive way and back multiple times.

I'm getting ready to prep and paint the front fairing. I'm going with a Batman Theme for my bike. I've always liked the slick looks of 'My' generations batman. The Pre-Batman forever batmobile like look. No Batpod.

Here's an artist rendering (not going to be matte black though)

Can't wait to get this on the road and start Adventuring.

Update 8-16-2011

I've been riding it for about a month and a half now.

Found out the Speedo does not work. Fortunately it was because I had my GPS mounted (zip tied) to the handle bars and not because I got pulled over. Although, I did get the speedo up to 45 which is equivalent to about 70. On Mt. Hope on MSU's campus. I'm surprised I didn't get pulled over.

I primed all the plastics and decided to leave them primed for now. Probably do paint this winter when it's in storage. I'll have access to a complete paint booth/Fab shop at my new job, so that will make it easier. That and oodles of knowledge from the old guys I'll be working with.

Still does not have a windshield though. I'm goign to try and make my own out of some plastic. If I have to, I'll try and find one on Ebay for cheap.

I'm looking to get a cheap 12V to USB adapter so I can plug in my GPS and not go through batteries. I also need to get an actual mount for it. It's an older handheld one. Should be easy to find. Anybody know of a cheap 12V to USB plug online? I'm thinking sub 5 bucks. I can get one at Meijers for 7 bucks. After I get one it will just be a matter of cutting things up and Soldering up the connections.

Found one Easy find I ordered 3. You can't beat $.01 a piece. I didn't even pay 10 dollars with S&H.

Loving the fact that I can ride it though!

Update August 21st, 2011

I don't know if it's Ingenuity of Ghetto Fab. But I had alittle fun today working on my bike.

First off, I made a 12V - USB plug for my GPS. Bought this Cigarette lighter/usb adapter on Amazon for $.01. I bought 3 and didn't break 10 dollars. Plus S&H.

Did some Modification and turned it into this

Then I found a nice place to put it on my bike. I hooked it up to what I assume to be the running light circuit (Blue wire on the front harness) for the front Turn signals. Ran the Ground right to the Battery.

While having the Front Cowl off I decided to try and figure out a better way to attach my GPS (AKA, my functioning Speedo). I came up with this. It's a peice of metal left over from the Tail Rack of my Trek. I used the screw that holds the Ignition cables. I then went to town on the Piece of metal to bend it all around. I then used the universal attachment devices (zip ties) to attach the GPS to it. I think it turned out great.

I did cut the left over plastic from that Zip tie. I didn't notice it intill after I took the picture. Also, I didn't plan on having the cable run through that little channel. It just worked out. Much like this whole 'mount'

There you go. Tested it out this evening and the USB charger works smashingly. It was for the GPS and it actually keeps the back light on the whole time. Which is nice because, as I stated, it's my functioning speedo. The new mount keeps it steady, it also gives me great access to it with my left hand. Not that I would ever do that while riding. 8) fun fun fun

These are great starter bikes, I had one when I was 16. It was flat black with chrome wheels and a dual Kerker exhaust.

I'm glad too. Finding out that Bruised ribs are not fun. Sneezing is not my favorite thing to do right now.

November 10, 2011.

I put the bike (or what's left of it) into our storage unit today. I'm still unsure if I'm goign to continue to ride or not. Either way, I'll probably end up fixing it up enough to, at least, sell it.

I made it my goal to ride till the first Snow fall which was today. I almost made it! Only a few days early. The bike needs a decent amount of work done to it to get it rideable agian.

The Good news, It actually still runs. I started it for about 30 second yesterday during lunch. Then shut it off because it has very little coolant in it. I wish I could have properly winterized it but time just wasn't on my side. Not to mention I didn't feel like changing the oil with bruised ribs, a sprained wrist and scrapes on all four corners (knees and elbows). I may take care of that in a few weeks after I heel up.

I'll keep you guys posted if I start working on it this winter.
