Default School me on working from home.

What works, what doesn't? I am looking for some tips to set up a real home office. I have brought work home with me, but I have never worked from home full time. I am looking for some advice of those more experienced.

I also am trying to figure out if this is something that I would even want to do. I kind of like actually going to work.

End of 2009 we were office-less for 3 months during the transition to a new place.
I HATED working from home.

I enjoy it from time to time.
Hated it everyday.

Bells is always in the fridge, and it's right across the room from your desk. How could it get any better.

I go to work to get away from home and go home to get away from work.

I do my service work in the field and my office work from home.

It is nice to get up and get a cup of coffee and work in my undies occasionally but couldn't sit at a desk all day, much less at home all day.

Way too much temptation to do other things at home then actually work.

I have the ability to do a lot of my work from my laptop from home, but the few times I have tried it, I couldnt make it work. I think if I had a house, with a dedicated office it would be different, but in my apartment, on my couch, its no good.

I have a dedicated office in my basement.

When I want to be unmotivated, one door and fourteen steps does not slow me down.

I haven't done it full time, but I set up a vpn connection so I can work at home. I connect and bring up my screen at the office and it is no different than if I was sitting at my desk. I can have full access to all the files, printers, estimating software, all the computers in the shop, etc. I can even reroute my calls to my cell. it helps to maintain productivity if i get stuck at home for some reason.

I have a room for a dedicated office, unfortunately it is the only one other then the kitchen I have not renovated. I would likely be on the road a lot and in the field. I will be finding more information out in a little over a week on what the requirements are.

The biggest thing is the travel, there will be a lot more of it. I am worried about that with a newborn at home with my wife.

Well I just was offered a new job on Friday, for substantially more money. I will have 2-3 days out of the 'office' per week and the balance in my home office.

I gotta get this figured out

I would set up a porn studio at my house, but it is not legal in Michigan.

x2 very nice to get things done when you have to be home, but not productive as the office.

make your home office private (closed room with door shut) and explain the situation to your family. Explain that even though you are home you still have work to do and should not be interrupted unless its important. Something along those lines. Distraction if my biggest problem.

I've "worked from home" for the past nine years. That said, I travel probably 50% of the time, but the balance is working from home. I would not have it any other way. Contrary to what others say, I find I work many more hours working from home, since work is always there.

You have to be disciplined for sure. Splitting time working from an office and home is not the same as totally working from home IMHO. If you have days in an office, working from home is like a vacation or treat, so you don't treat it the same as if home is your office.

I am going to have 50-75% travel, but the money being offered is... well, well worth it.

I can barely do homework at home

I think it comes down to personality. I am very easily distracted by shiny things so I don't get shit done unless I am in the correct environment, and usually that is with as few distractions as possible, coffee shop, or library, but mostly never at home.

I think you'll find that you like it. Set up a dedicated work area when at home.

I enjoy the travel. It can be a pain, but once you figure out the travel routine, accept it for what it is (not getting wrapped around the axle over travel issues you have no control over), it's all good. I Meet new people all the time, and forge relationships with onging customers. The freedom and flexibility you have when not on the road really balances things out for me.
