Because I had ran the same tie rods he is running now and I broke mine multiple times .

^truth. I've built and spec'd most of my parts based on what CTEB breaks

I'll be upgrading to a Moog TRE for the pitman arm and changing the other 3 over to ruffstuff 3/4" heims.
Xj4life, CTEB and I came up with a combo that seems to be working for CTEB
Studs:

"Tie Rod adapter bushing" per hole based on how you ream it out. We reamed to chevy taper for the TRE's we were using so we had to use bushings.

Were they standard Chevy 1 ton TREs or something smaller? What's the benefit of running the tapered studs with the heims rather than just drilling the knuckles or hi-steer arms out to 3/4"? Do people have problems with them getting wallowed out or something?

Yes, bolts oblong the holes in the knuckles, become loose over time, and even break. With the tapered stud it won't loosen over time and at any point I/we can stick a tie rod back in the knuckle.

They are actually the 1/2-3/4 ton tie rods. Just everybody mistakes them for one ton tie rods. Its just become an accepted term to call them one tons.

The "one ton tre's" people refer to are 7/8-18 thread pitch. While the actual one ton tie rods are 1-18 thread pitch.

This is the most common part numbers used on steering conversions.

With a taper you don't have to be as exact and it'll still tighten down, with a straight hole, well not so much. We both used Chevy "1 ton TRE's" but from XRC or something like that. He broke his, I kept mine together this weekend. I already have all the Heim stuff, just didn't have time to install it before this trip.

Getting a close look at this rig I was very impressed with the quality and attention to detail, he knows were the governor is and it performs very well, p.s. don't let him fool you he does know how to drive, but I think an auto would be a good upgrade. It was nice to meet you this last weekend, hope to wheel with you again.

run 3/4 to a 7/8 heim in all your steering stuff.i will not run tre have seen too many break. i have had my heims for 4 years with no issues.have them on my track bar also.

I have either 3/4" or 7/8" hiems ready to go, can't remember which size though I have other stuff to take care of first

Thank you sir, it was good meeting you and wheeling with you too. That buggy does really well.

I'm not convinced I need to switch back to the cheater trans just yet. Sure it would be easier but where's the fun in that I know I had way more control when I had an auto though. I probably wouldn't have had such a hard time with an auto, but that's also part of what I like about it
