Gov. Rick Snyder signs law to ensure unemployed continue receiving benefits in Michig

Gov. Rick Snyder signs law to ensure unemployed continue receiving benefits in Michigan for up to nearly two years

http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/in...nes_law_to.htm

LANSING — Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill that will renew jobless benefits for about 35,000 unemployed Michiganders, who otherwise would have stopped receiving funds by the end of the week.

The state is set to lose a federally-backed 20-week unemployment compensation extension effective Friday because Michigan no longer meets the national criteria required to participate in the program due to declining unemployment numbers.

The federal Extended Benefits program provides 20 weeks worth of unemployment benefits to those who have been unable to find work during the previous 79 weeks, including 26 weeks of state benefits and 53 weeks of federal.

To offset the cost to extending the program for Michigan residents, state legislators voted for a bill that will shrink the state-funded benefits from 26 weeks to 20 weeks beginning in January of 2012.

The bill began as anti-fraud measure, but transformed into the unemployment extension bill that eventually passed last week.

State Rep. Kenneth B. Horn, R-Frankenmuth, called the legislation a “win-win for everybody;” while those criticizing the bill, such as Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Witmer of East Lansing, said GOP claims of helping workers over the long term are “baloney” and called the changes “punitive.”

Throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region, the most recent unemployment figures —11.2 percent in Bay County, 11 percent in Saginaw County and 8.6 percent in Midland County —were up slightly from December.

Officials attribute higher unemployment to job cuts because of winter weather and the end of the holiday season.

Lets just make it an even five years. But you of course must have worked at least 90 days to qualify.

I didnt hear a beep about this from my kids at work, most of whom use it to supplement their income. I wonder how many people are breathing another sigh of relief...another summer of sun and fun.

I'm on unemployment for the winter because I'm in construction. I agree that it's a bit too long for people too sit around. I know guys that have been collecting for 3 years and don't plan too look for work until it runs out. That's not cool if I knew my job wasn't there in the spring I'd be out lookin for a job now. It's just that people are getting lazy and take advantage of the system.

What you are missing is the unprecedented cut of state UA benefits from 26 weeks to 20. We are the only state to do this so far. Once federal extensions are gone, and things start to rebound, future unemployment claims will be limited to 20 weeks.

unemployment should be flexible based on the avg. savings/equity of people under a certain AGI. If the avg spending is $2000 and the avg saving is $12000, then unemployment should go for 6 months. This gives 1 yr to find a job and yeah maybe you cant find a job where you are...move, educate yourself, lower your standards.
