Most of the changes done to E40D were done internally to increase durability. The 95 and 97 are similar transmissions with 97 being a more updated and more durable trans. The only thing you might have to change is the range sensor (attached to the manual lever on the side of the trans) or the solenoid pack which requires removing the pan to swap out. I don't think you'll have to swap the solenoid pack, because if I remember correctly, the year break is 94 down are the same and 95 up should be the same.

hey!
some 95 trans used a diffirent solenoid than the 96-up ones.

I know this because I converted my 95 ecm to a 96 obd2 and it fried it!

there is an article about it in the bauminator trans controller install manual.
It is a stand alone controller for the e4od

That may be true for a stand alone controller, but the 95-97 solenoid packs are the same and interchangeable thus not harming the ECM. 89-94 wont plug into the 95 up solenoid packs. He is going to be fine with his 97 trans because the diesels stayed relatively the same with the exception of some internal upgrades. The solenoid pack he needs to watch out for is the late 1998 up PWM solenoid packs.
