Thanks all.

We made a little progress over the girls' Christmas break, but not as much as I had planned on. We were too busy ice skating, watching movies, making paintings/crafty stuff, playing "Angry Birds" on the iPod, etc. It's all good, though. It was a great week together.

We did get the engine compartment pretty much stripped down. The engine wiring harness is out, along with all accessories short of the power brake booster and one of the frame-mounted motor mounts. We wiped down the grime in the engine bay, and it's all pretty much shiny black paint (no surface rust). SO, it'll just be a matter of scuffing the paint, degreasing, and giving it a fresh top-coat. We'll likely use Eastwood Underhood Black.

This thread
also led me to truck myself down to Napa and buy a few cans of Dupli-color Wheel Coating. I picked up a couple cans of Satin Black, and one of Graphite. We're going to try out a couple small sections on some old wheels and see which we like better, keeping in mind that the Jeep will most likely end up painted BBQ black. I worked for a while on cleaning up one of the Ravine wheels that has some corrosion around the outer lip (Mira was playing "Angry Birds" at the time ). The wheel clean-up will be a "between other jobs" type of project.

When I bought the wheel paint, I also picked up a can of Dupli-Color Caliper Paint. The new brake calipers are now painted shiny black, and look great. We'll see how it holds up to heat/use after the vehicle is drivable. I figured it was worth a shot. EDIT (1/5/2011): My initial impression with the caliper paint (after drying) is that it's fairly brittle/flaky. I'm not sure how it'll hold up, but it was worth trying. Maybe it'll be better after curing for a few days.

I didn't get any further with the floor pan repair, but the patch under the driver's feet is about 2/3 complete. Again, it's the grinding/smoothing that's taking all the time, but it's looking good. FWIW, welding sheet metal is kind of a PITA relative to most of the work I have done (on 1/8" & 3/16" steel).

More to come...

Craig

I took advantage of a sale at Harbor Freight today and picked up a creeper so Mira would have one of her own. I also got an engine stand, which will come in handy when cleaning up & painting hers, as well as installing new gaskets. Other HF purchases included a couple magnetic bowls for holding bolts while working, a couple peg board hook sets, etc. I even had a coupon for a fee tarp. Total bill today...$89 and some change. Can't beat it; there are some things that Harbor Freight is really handy for.

I placed an order from Eastwood yesterday. Arriving soon...
  • Pre Painting Prep Aerosol
  • Diamond Clear Satin/Metal Surfaces Aerosol
  • Rust Encapsulator Black Aerosol
  • Aluma Blast Paint Aerosol
  • Extreme Chassis BlackSatin 14 oz Aerosol
  • Underhood Black Semi Gloss Aerosol

I already have all the POR-15 prep products on-hand (Marine Clean, Metal-Ready, etc.), but thought I'd also give the Eastwood Pre cleaner a try. The water-based POR-15 Marine Clean does an OK job, but is not alone adequate to completely degrease parts, in my experience. I have typically followed the Marine Clean with a couple wipe-downs of acetone, whcih typically picks up additional dirt/grime. I'm hoping the Pre will work better.

For metal converters, I did not buy the Eastwood Rust Dissolver yet, but may give it a shot down the road. I already have on-hand, and have used in the past, both POR-15 Metal-Ready and Naval Jelly. Both work well, and basically use phosphoric acid to convert & neutralize the rust.

I also held off on ordering the Eastwood ceramic engine paint, as we won't be ready for that until mid-to-late summer, I'm guessing.

We'll do a product review of each of the Eastwood products after we use them.

Cool build, its not often that you find kids interested in doing things like this let alone little girls. I am sure it will be one sweet ride once she can drive.

Progress has been slow, but that's OK. We've been busy with other creative projects. A few updates, though. First, the floorpan patch repair (under driver's feet) is going decently well. I'm about half to two-thirds of the way done.

Floorpan after cut-out (NOTE: I used 3-M Weld-Thru coating on the frame rails and under the patch panel before welding it in):

Floorpan with fitted patch panel (recycled from part of the old hood):

Floorpan patch partially done (welds ground down & sanded).

I have to say that I MUCH prefer welding 1/8"-3/16" steel. Sheet metal is a bit of a pain. Fortunately, we're not on a pressing deadline.

Mira got to work on a few things over her Christmas break, including removal of some engine compartment bits, and also starting on disassembling the dash. We did find an amplifier under the lower dash panel; we'll have to test it to see if it works, and will use it if it does. NOTE: Despite the bird's nest that's still in the radio opening, no actual birds were harmed during the course of our work.

I also had some PM discussion on Pirate with Dave at Ballistic Fabrication about how happy Mira is with her Ballistic Christmas gifts. He was pleased that she liked their stuff, but that was the extent of the discussion. Then, on my doorstep last week arrived a small package from Ballistic - a kid-sized shirt with a pink skull printed on front, and "Ballistic" on the back. Mira doesn't know about it yet, and I'm going to surprise her with it when I see her on Tuesday. So thank you, Ballistic Fabrication, for sponsoring Mira with this. She's diggin' your products so far.

That's all for now. More work to come this afternoon after church (I'm itchy to keep working on it)...

Dang, I gotta slow down and read more build threads!

Awesome! I am compiling an eastwood order this morning and will crib off of yours. Craig!

Awesome progress, you two!

After seeing
stroaks CJ build
, Mira REALLY liked the Synergy Green used on the new Camaros. We'll decide for sure on color down the road, but the Synergy Green is neck & neck with the BBQ black for paint options.

Oh, and here's Mira sporting her new Ballistic Fabrication shirt (and also a cool stainless XJ sign that I found for her on NAXJA).

mira, i think the black will look better on the jeep. itll make it look a little more "rigid" and you wont be so upset when you get your first scratch on the paint either way though, itll look good!

I am a big fan of any color Rustoleum sells in gallon pails, myself. :) I use a sprayer and spray it on real thin, several coats, polish like ordinary automotive paint and it's real shiny and real cheap to repair.
There is a lot of write ups about this on the internet. It's how I was going to do the Jeep, but the paint is still so good I don't have to worry about it. I did the bus that way though.

Minor update (not really)...

With the weather breaking, I'm more motivated to get out and work. I worked more on welding/grinding the driver floor pan patch this week. My natural "perfectionist" tendencies are making a short job into a long job, especially when it's probably going to be covered up with Dynomat (or something similar) and a rubber floor mat.

I also added a "Net Project Investment" amount to Mira's first post in this thread. At this point, we only have $572 wrapped up in the entire project.
