Default 300 Straight 6 Gas Mileage

Ok so I keep hearing different things about the gas mileage for a 300 six. Most people say they get worse mileage than a 302, but I've also heard a few people say they get great mileage. I had an 89 F250 with a 300 six that got 20 mpg. My 92 F150 only got maybe 13 when I first bought it, but recently did a full tune up and now I get about 16.5 - 19 mpg. Anyone else have issues with the gas mileage?

*Both trucks are fuel injected and have the 5 speed transmission. I have never owned a 300 automatic.

Do you have the manual or auto?

Fuel injection and the 5 speed tranmission make a big difference too. My friends got an 84 F-150 with a 4 speed auto / carb 300 six and gets maybe 12 on a good day.

It was the 5 speed. I didn't think about that.

I had an 89 5 speed 4.9 Bronco, got 8 on a good day, I could never figure out why. Did cap, rotor, plugs, wires fuel filter, new coolant temp sensor, and drove it like a grandma and still only for 6-8 MPG

I put a new tank in it, and did a few 150-200 mile rounds trips after and still got 8 mpg max.

Something was definetly wrong with it if you were only getting 8mpg.

i get about 18 out of my 96 obd-II when nothing is broken. Currently a small leak in my A.I.R. manifold has dropped it to about 8-10.
